Major: Chemistry
Alternate: Anthropology
GPA: 3.21
Prereqs: Completed Anthro, Almost finished Chem
IGETC: Completed
TAP: Yes
E.C./Work: Strong, worked as a Lab technician for a medical company
Essays: Pretty Strong

I'm hoping my strong upward grade trend and TAP will help me here. my main choice of course being chemistry.

Please, someone give me advice and thoughts on this!

Realistically speaking, a gpa of 3.21 is probably not going to help you get into UCLA. Although you do have tap, and you said your essay is pretty strong. Since your a chem major and you worked as a lab technician, it might strengthen your chance. I wouldn’t bet on you getting in, but its definitely not impossible for you to get in.

Hmm…3.2 is lowish. BUT I’ve never seen anyone get rejected with TAP and have Anthro as their alternate. I’d say you have a decent chance of getting in with Anthropology. Especially since your prerequisites are done with A’s and you’ve got TAP.

I once saw someone get into UCLA with a 3.1, no TAP.

I definitely wouldn’t say you’ve got no chance; you’ve got a very GOOD chance of getting in with Anthropology. But remember, that’s just me speaking from what I’ve seen/know, haha.

Chemistry isn’t super impacted… It has an admit rate of 54%, although your GPA is below the average. You will have a good chance at Anthro and you could probably always switch later since it’s not impacted.

Last year someone got rejected with TAP, Anthro alt major, 3.2 GPA…but I don’t think they completed all their pre-reqs. You still have a chance, but don’t be too condident. Be ready with a backup school.

@SMCguy: Really?! I’ve searched, asked, and even hired a private eye (well, not really); I’ve never seen anyone get rejected unless they had completed absolutely none of the prerequisites or had gotten C’s in them.

Was it someone from this forum? I’d love to see it.

You have TAP, work experience and applied for the non-impacted Chemistry major. I’d say if they let people with “low” GPAs in (and they do), you should have a good shot. Consider going to some of the other UCs too! You should get in at UCSB, UCI, UCD and maybe UCSD. Those are all super schools not a lot behind UCLA in rankings. Also, visit these campuses… You might find yourself falling in love with one of them, making it your first choice (this happened to me).
Good luck for UCLA, but remember, the other UCs are great too!
