I was accepted to UCLA's communication program this fall and accepted, but had to decline because I no longer could afford the tuition because of some personal circumstances. Now, I am planning to work for a year and this will make it possible for me to afford it again. My question is: is there even a slight chance I will be accepted?! I am going to work in a business related to my major if that helps.

If anyone has any advice, please let me know. Thanks :)

Why did you decline? I thought you can defer enrollment for a year.

Your chance as getting accepted will be similar to 2014 Fall. In your application you would need to explain the one year gap (assuming you’re not taking any classes). Also, judging by admission trends it gets a bit harder to get in every year.

If it’s not too late check to see if you can delay your enrollment.

I didn’t think you could do that, as I read that they only granted that under certain circumstances such as active military duty. I didn’t really have any good reason for it, other than that I could not afford it at the moment Maybe it was a big mistake not to ask, but I really didn’t think that I would ever be able to afford it (however, now I can). I declined in late July, so I don’t think I can do something about it now

I don’t think you can defer enrollment at UCLA, unfortunately.

You’ll probably get accepted if you explain in your personal statement why you couldn’t go the year before. It helps a lot to get the money you need to afford school from a business that’s related to your major. I think I can say that you’ll get in…again. lol

Good luck, man. Let us know how things go in April 2015.

Thanks for the replies guys! I will reapply and see how it goes. UCLA has always been my dream school, was heartbroken when I had to decline but I just have to hope that I get in again!

You should contact UCLA admissions for a definitive answer, or talk to their rep when they next visit your CC. But it sounds like you are asking will they be mad at you for turning them down and reject you out of anger or spite. My understanding is they don’t care if you applied previously or not, they will consider your app as if they’ve never heard from you before.

Thanks! I am an international student so I will just have to contact the admission as they won’t come here. But yeah, my fear is basically that they may turn me down because they know I already turned them down once lol. Something along the lines of “OK so she turned us down the last time because she couldn’t afford it, maybe she will do it again so it is better if we give her a spot to someone else”. I guess it doesn’t hurt to try though.

I’m done with community college (no more classes that I need) so I’m afraid that they will think bad things about the fact that I didn’t transfer straight away, but instead took a gap year in order to save up some money. As I am an international student and university is free in my home country, there is nowhere to turn to for loans and because of that I just have to work first in order to pay for my tuition.
