Rejected to UCLA/UCB, should I reapply?

Hi all, being rejected by both of my dream schools has put me into great disappointment and I feel so lost atm and have no idea which is the best solution in my case.

I am an international student and a sophomore at a community college in California. I am majoring in Communications. I applied to UCLA Communication Studies (Alternative: Linguistics) and Berkeley Media Studies. My current GPA is 3.98 (3.97 when applying, 4.0 major gpa), TAP certified, TAG and accepted to UCSD, president of a volunteer service club at my college, had a few summer internship experience related to my major.

I can only think of one main reason of being rejected. I actually missed one of major preps of UCLA's Comm when applying. According to UCLA: "finish at least 4 out of 7 major prerequisites by the end of fall quarter prior to transfer." My school offers 5 out of 7 and usually people still get accepted even they have 2 of them missing. When I apply I had only 3 of them done. I didn't notice that "rule" until November. I was convinced by people that taking Honors courses would enhance my application and have a higher chance of being accepted. My school requires student to finish at least 12 quarter units of Honors courses by the end of fall and that's why I had to complete it if I wanted to be TAP certified. At the same time, I had to take English 1B during fall quarter in order to fulfill TAG. Given the intensive workload from the honors courses and Eng1B, I could not finish the 4th major prerequisite by the end of fall. It was too late when I realized the mistake and I called UCLA Comm department and they said I wasn't even eligible. However, they said I could still try to apply. I immediately completed the remaining 2 prerequisites the next quarter and obtained A+ and A.

So now I'm being rejected. And I really want to get in these two schools as I have been working so hard to maintain my gpa these two years. I know it's my own fault for not looking at the requirements clearly and ask advisors clearly before taking the Honors program. But is it possible for me to appeal and tell UCLA my situation? Should I wait for another year and reapply again with the gpa of 3.98 and 5 major prep done? Will my chances be lower if I am a re-applicant?

I wish someone can tell me what should I do now :'(

Looks like you have to pick a different school , or wait a year and reapply .

I’m guessing you didn’t come all this way to go to a CSU , so you might want to reapply next year once you have more pre-reqs done .

Do you think the chance of being successful in my appeal is low? Even I have finished the 5 major pre immediately the next quarter and the reason is because I had to fulfill the TAP at the same time? (dang the honors advisors have never told me about that) Will my chances be lowered if I am a re-applicant next year?

The vast majority of appeals fail , keep in mind this is different then if you we’re wait listed . Did you get accepted into any other schools . UCI’s OK

I’m accepted to Davis and UCSD. But UCLA is my ultimate goal and the reason for me to join TAP.

Hmm, did just make a thread saying to look at the actual graduation rates . You have a far better chance of finishing UCLA or UCB in 2 years after transfer then UCSD or Davis , and for you its like 50k a year …

I can’t tell you what to do , but I’d go for applying next year, get EVERY pre-req done and be ready to graduate on time at UCLA . Good luck !

If you do reapply, have a back up plan. UCLA and UCB will not be guaranteed the second time around.

I don’t think it’s worth spending another year of your life in C.C. UCSD is a great school, so is UCI : )

Go to UCI or UCSD…ucla isn’t even close to being worth an extra year of CC. Get on with things…don’t romanticize ucla so much.

Ask an adviser at UCLA if you can take classes concurrently and have them count for your degree .

It’s up to you , BUT if you stay an extra year , and finish EVERY lower division requirement possible for UCLA you’ll stand a great chance of graduating within 2 years ( if not sooner ) .

Since your paying out of state tuition you might not have the money to take a 3rd year , talk it over with your parents since they’ll have to foot the bill .

But do you think appeal would work in my case? Like if I explain the reason why I couldn’t finish the 4th major prep by the end of fall. And had immediately taken two remaining classes the next quarter and obtained an A+ and A in them?

So if my college do not offer all 7 major preps. Only 5 of them. And I have finished 5 of them now. Should I appeal?

Reapplying has no bearing on your chances of admissions. It’s going to be the same as if you applied the first time. I stayed an extra year after not getting in the UCs I wanted to in 2011 and reapplied for 2012 and was admitted to all but one I had reapplied to.

1.Appeal in any case. Explain your situation, there are tips on appeal writing on Ms. Sun’s blog.
2.Submit SIR to UCSD (or UCD).
3.Wait.
4.If your appeal goes through then you are set! if not, then you have to decide if you want wait another year to get another CHANCE to go to UCB/UCLA or just attend UCSD (or UCD) which is a great school too.

dilapidatedmind - Would you mind to tell which UC rejected you? I believe the reason I got rejected is because I didn’t finish 4 major prep (only 3) by the end of fall. But I have them done now. So will they still consider me next year?

What UCLA stresses the most is that you finish all your prerequisites before you apply, and obviously that you do well in them. So yes, they would consider you next year.

But do you recommend me to appeal? Cause if I didn’t join the Honors program and TAG, I wouldn’t have taken 3 Honor classes and English 1B at the same time in Fall quarter, and in that case I could have finished the pre-req by the end of Fall… :frowning: Arghhh I shouldn’t have listened to my school’s advise to join TAP :(

218, I don’t think you’re listening to most of the people on this thread. You have been accepted at two uc’s. The adcom’s talk to each other from the different UC’s. UCLA has given you their answer; they are full.
If you try to appeal, I personally think you will be rejected again. Why? Because it will be based on the fact that you’ve already been accepted by the UC system
AND you were unaware of the requirements for the UCLA program,
AND you were unable to meet those posted requirements by the deadline
AND balance your schedule of Honors classes at a community college.
If you attempted Honors classes at the CC and it was difficult for you there, imagine how hard it would be for you at a UC campus.
If you reapply, you will have to wait a year and hope that other transfer students competing with you and your situation don’t look better on paper than you do.
Additionally, as an international student, you’ll be paying full fees at whichever campus you attend. As a transfer student, at a UC campus, financial aid is almost nil.

ucla218 , the main advantage to staying an extra year at CC is you’ll be able to better prepare yourself to finish at a UC in 2 years .
Right now it seems that no matter what UC you go to , your missing some pre-reqs . Its WAY cheaper to finish them at CC then to go to a UC and need an extra year

aunt bea, thisislife - Thank you for all your generous comments :)
