Reason why you are going to UCSD

so, I just wanted to know why everyone chose to go to UCSD even though people complain about it being anti social and boring etc.

When it comes to fun, college is what you make of it. There are plenty of things to do at UCSD. It is located at a great area too. I recently visited UCSD on a school day, and, I must say, it isn't as lively as other campuses (uci, ucla, ucd). Whatever school you choose, you'll have a great time. Reasons why I would choose UCSD if I had the chance would be its competition, insanely nice buildings, location, and weather.

A lot about it really describes/fits with my personality....im a little bit more fun than most people make it out to be, but i myself am not a huge drinker/partier....its laid back, and a huge draw for me is the consistent 73* weather......im looking forward to that after living in colo for 18 years.

I barely decided that I was certain on going to UCSD about 3 days ago--certain enough that I ended up sending my SIR that day, too. Here's why:

1) I love the fact that the beach is so close to the campus. Although I live in LA right now, the nearest beach is still a 35-45 minute drive from my house. I realized that if I went to UCSD, it'd just be a 5-10 minute walk away instead. If my schedule permits, I'll probably be going there very, very often. I mean think about it, you'll get to watch sunsets, you'll get to watch sunrises (if you're willing to wake up that early), and if you're a volleyball freak like I am, you'll get to play volleyball right on the sand. To me, that's awesome. Plus, it'd be a great place to study too.

2) When I went there for Admit Day, I had no trouble picturing myself going to UCSD for 4 years. I got a certain vibe from it. Not all people can sense that--but sometimes, you can just feel whether the campus is a right fit for you or not.

3) The campus is beautiful. I don't think I'd have any trouble finding where all the buildings are either. Everything seemed so organized. :p

4) It's rankings and prestige are top-notch. I'm more than likely going into the science/medical field...and when you go to a university that's known for being the "hottest in science," it'll be a definite plus to your resume.

5) They offered me the best financial aid package out of all the colleges I applied to. I'm kind of going with what my teacher once told me--go where the money is. That's not to say money means everything, of course...but at least paying back loans and what-not will be one less thing to worry about after I'm through with my 4+ years.

6) Though a lot of people say that UCSD isn't much of a party school, I think that's probably a load of BS. This was the big factor weighing on my decision too. I heard so much talk about how it was boring, how there's nothing to do in La Jolla, how no one ever has any fun, crazy parties and this and that. Of course no one's gonna put it out in the open and be like "Oh yeah, we have keg parties in our dorms every weekend," even though I'm pretty sure that happens on any UC campus, no matter what the rules and regulations are.
But I could be wrong. Maybe UCSD is really full of studious students who aren't into that sort of thing. But if -you- are, SDSU isn't very far away, as people have mentioned already. You can always hitch a ride there with one of your friend-party-goers and have a good time there. Or you can always take a train to LA. I don't know, but to me this isn't as big of an issue for me as it was not too long ago. You either gotta make or find your own fun.

7) Rosarito isn't too far either. That's another place to party. Every time I go there with close friends/family, we end up having the time of our lives. ((Plus you don't get carded if you want a drink...or two...or three. :p))

8) A lot of my friends are going to UCLA and UCI. And as horrible as this may sound, I don't want to risk seeing any of them every single day for another 4 years. We've had our fun. It's time for me to get to know other people and be in a different environment.

So, these are my reasons. I probably have more, but I'll post those later. :p

Hope this helped. :]

nice list buddy...i had pretty much similar reasons as you...i was almost a 100% sold on ucla but ucsd came thru

The second I walked into the area I felt at home. Everything from the La Jolla Playhouse Theatre on the outskirts to the stupid talking tree to the library to Price Center to shady little spots I can't wait to study in to the grassy quad around Muir...
To me, college isn't about partying or how much "fun" I can possibly cram into 4 years...it's more like figuring out what will hopefully make me happy for the next 50 years of my life and meeting new and interesting people, trying new things, and being responsibly independant. Basically I like to do my own thing, and I feel like at UCSD I'll have the perfect balance. (I hope so!)
I'm all for partying, but like someone else posted in another thread, I'd rather be at SD looking for a party than at SB trying to avoid one. (Which is why I chose SD over SB...)
I thought the fact that I live 30 min. away from UCSD would be terrible, but actually, who can object to being able to come home whenever to do laundry and sleep in my own bed if I want to?
OH, and, everyone complains about school spirit/lack of football team and whatnot, but I never gave a crap about that in HS...so why would it matter to me in college..I'm all for the intramurals
So....those are some of my reasons =D! Yay Tritons! + Muirons!

Heh yeah that 'someone' was me. I made my decision tonight in favor of UCSD. And im also a 'Muiron' . Should be fun being so close to the beach; im an OOS-er (NY) so that will definately be a welcome change.

From NY to CA?? That's exciting....!
+ My favorite part of the whole college deal so far is actually committing to a college and getting really stoked to go there =D Yay for "making the decision"!

If everyone is really tripping about not having parties, then just go a couple miles south and hit up tiajuana!! I'm sure they wouldn't mind if a couple of 18-20 year olds wanna buy some "stuff" and have a lil fun.

the weather. i want to wake up in shorts and a cami and be able to soak up the sunlight. i'll never have to fear seasonal depression disorder??? in sd

academics. it's competitive, but not cutthroat like ucla/calberk. the sciences dominated. there are so many opportunities for research projects

i'm sick of norcal. im done with having sheep as neighbors. it's a change of pace.

erc cultivates worldy, humanitarians.

having an intimate small liberal arts college feel from the small colleges, while having the luxuries of a large research univ. i also love the college clubs and the univ. clubs.

I adore the campus, the college I got into (ERC) has GEs that are friendly to nonscience majors, it's safe, it's big, the library is awesome, ERC has the newest dorms, near the beach hence fresh air...

Problem is, the rules are enforced...at least at Revelle. Warren RSO's have been known to be much more lax.

:)

wow...i think fakeplastictrees said it perfectly, those are the reasons i would go to UCSD(and i actually got into muir too!), but then again i'm still waiting on berkeley. for some reason if i got into berkeley and didn't go there, i would think that its a waste b/c its hard to get into and is so prestigious. does anyone have insights on berkeley? i feel like it might be a bit too politically active for me and i might not fit in.

It was the best grad school I got into and could actually afford...

hailtothetheif........<3RADIOHEAD!!!! you should probably go to muir/SD ...hehe...

yeah i agree about the Berkeley thing. I'm having a REALLY hard time deciding and I don't want to regret later on

berkeley...it's gotten less politically active, but there are some strange happenings there. i heard that the protests there can actually be disrupting to your education e.g. protesting students creating a "human barrier" to stop ppl from going to class...

Last week, some guy burned a u.s. flag on the street corner

vii is hatin!

i might be there, thats a reason to go
