I am a bit confused about the common app recommendation section…I will be asking two teachers via Naviance for recommendation. Will their recommendation be applied to all of the colleges I have listed on the common app? Or do I have to request them for each college? Also, I will have my dance instructor submit an additional letter via common app…do I just request her once or do I have to do it for each college? I’m so confused…thanks in advance!
Yes, the recommendations will be applied to all of the colleges you apply to on the common app.
Our high school uses Naviance, and the way it worked for us was that the teacher(s) wrote the letter and gave it to the GC. The GC uploads the letters into Naviance. Make sure you waive your FERPA rights because you want the letters to be a true and honest letter on your behalf and not something that the colleges know you have read.
If your dance instructor will write an additional letter, make sure that the college allows a third letter. Usually this type of letter will need to be sent directly to the school from the dance teacher. (see my comment below). Or sometimes the college itself will have a page in which additional recommenders can upload a letter on your behalf. Check with your GC on this, though.
If your colleges are not on the common app, then I think they may have to be mailed directly to the school and there are usually some rules that must be followed. For example, it needs to be written on school letterhead and mailed from the school. The envelope has to be sealed and the teacher’s signature has to be written on the sealed portion of the envelope so the adcoms will know that it has not been tampered with or that it is a fake letter.
Thank you so much! I will ask about the Naviance for my teachers. I see on the common app for each of my college’s tabs, that they have a specific tab on recommenders - teachers via Naviance and additional recommendations. Would I just have to invite my dance teacher here? Would it only be once like the Naviance or do I have to request for each school? Also, my dance teacher will submit a paper app for a supplementary for a uc school. Sorry for all of the questions! I just want everything to go well! Thank you again! 
If your school uses Naviance, then you do not invite teachers and recommenders through the common app. If your school does not use Naviance then you can invite through the common app.
You probably should ask your GC about the dance instructor letter if your school uses Naviance. Your GC may want to upload with the rest of your recommendations or he/she may want your dance instructor to send it separately. When my D was applying, she had a music teacher write an additional letter for her and the letter was sent to each school’s admissions officel via snail mail.
@TiggyB62 Thanks so much! Okay so my GC just emailed me back and ALL recs will be through Naviance. Do you know what questions will be asked for my additional recommender? I see the offline form for teacher recs but not for the additional recs?
@balletlove97 I think your best bet would be to have your dance instructor just write a letter to show how your passion and dedication to dance have helped mold you into the person you are outside of the classroom.
