I read on a post here that Common App will say "The college will read up to three recommendations". Is that for every college? Also, do all three of these have to be a teacher? Or can there be a mix of teachers and others?

Once the common app re-opens in August, you will need to look up every school where you plan to apply. Each one will have its own separate requirements, including specific requirements for recommendations. Some schools only want one teacher rec, some require two, some accept more. Some require one from a math/science teacher and some also require one from a humanities/English teacher. many don’t specify subject areas. In addition to teacher recs, you will also need a counselor recommendation for each school. Many schools will not accept recs from someone other than a teacher/counselor. You’ll need to look up each school to find out what yours requires and allows.

Thank you! Besides the Common App, is there a place on the school website usually that says what they accept? I would like to know because I want to ask the head of my lab for a recommendation, but obviously won’t if none of my schools will accept it.

Usually this information appears in the admissions section of the school website where the application process is described. You can always call the school and ask, if you can’t find it.

Not every school asks for rec letters. Like others have said, you need to look at each schools’ requirements. Your lab supervisor’s rec letter would be considered a “supplemental” letter. Useful for schools that accept two from teachers. It would be your third.

Some schools may only ask for ONE rec letter. Then you should submit one from a teacher.
