S2 is kind of muddling through the course list trying to fill out his choice for his first year. Any recent students have input on what to take/what to avoid?
His major is likely business consulting or business data analytics. He likely will have a 5 on BC Calc and got a 5 junior year on AP English so gets to skip a couple of typical classes.
Generally speaking, a Freshman is not allowed to take any business courses at Mendoza. However, if a student has credits from several AP courses that satisfies the core curriculum, and are in need of a course to fill an open spot in the Freshman schedule, they may be offered a slot in a business class. I can’t remember what course they were offering to let my son take, but he opted for a Math course instead since he was contemplating a Finance/Mathematics double major.
Your son will be assigned a first year counselor which will help you determine the best schedule for the Freshman year. Just communicate with your counselor what questions you might have and they will offer up several alternatives for you to consider.
So S2 went through the whole process, reading course descriptions and checking on requirements, and still totally messed it up. He has been emailing back and forth with his advisor to straighten it out.
IMO, freshman year usually turns out to focus on two things, 1.) knocking out university requirements and 2.) taking intro classes in subjects he might be interested in. For example, I took Intro to Design Thinking, and I loved it!
