Hey all, this is my first thread on this forum because I've been freaking out a little bit.

I applied to Pennsylvania state University and was accepted but not to the campus I wanted to go to. I really wanted to go to university park but I was accepted onto Altoona instead. My parents are really disappointed in me because of it. I wrote a reconsideration letter to the director of admissions at Penn state. Will he even read the letter? What are my chances of being reconsidered? Should I do anything else because I'm pretty desperate right now. Help please!

First things first. I’m sorry you feel that your parents are disappointed in you over this. I hope they’re not, and I hope they’d never say such a thing, but I know there are parents who would be disappointed, and who wouldn’t make a secret of it.

Second, I think your prospects for success have a lot to do with the basis for your request. If they made their decision based on incomplete or inaccurate information (for example, they never received the community-college transcript that lists the Italian classes you’ve been taking on top of Spanish in high school), that gives you the greatest chance of success. On the other hand, if you asked them to reconsider, but you have basically the same qualifications you had when they made their initial decision, I’m afraid the likelihood that you’ll get a favorable response is vanishingly small. I’ve never heard of a university that reversed itself because the applicant really, really wanted to go there. Particularly when, as in your case, “there” is the campus that most people really want to go to.

I wish I had a more encouraging assessment. Sorry.

Thanks for the reply. I really wish that I had more to add to my application to the college but i don’t. The reason why i even considered writing a letter is because my friend told me today that he was accepted into Penn State York for business but he called them and they said that he could go to Main for undecided studies. Man, this really sucks. I knew I should’ve retaken my SATs. I got a 1610 on them but i guess they weren’t high enough along with my GPA.

No kidding? Well, what the heck? It sure doesn’t cost anything to ask!

Good luck.

I appreciate it tons Sikorsky. I asked my guidance counselor just now if she sent in my senior grades and if she didn’t i will include them with my letter of appeal. I have done pretty well my first semester of my senior year and that shouldn’t hurt to include them right? Also, how late do they usually accept appeals? Would they retake SAT scores if I took them one last time? Thanks for answers and your time!

By all means, send the first-semester grades.

As for the rest, I simply don’t know enough about Penn State to have any idea. Sorry.

Okay, not a problem. Thanks anyway!

I asked a guy that was a member of recruitment team and he said the admission committee is always willing to reconsider applications if the applicants have updated info like new SAT score or transcripts…Since taking the March SAT will be too late, you should send in your new transcript and ask them for reconsideration by changing your major to undecided and saying you are willing to do the summer season if you really want to goto Penn State…

That’s very helpful. I will definitely ask my guidance counselor to send in my updated transcripts. I did sign up for undecided for university park but I said no to summer sessions. I will contact them saying that I am willing to do summer sessions at Penn state. I wonder if I should call or e mail them. Thanks for reply

PSU really discourages letters of appeal except if there is new information of some sort. I’m sending one because I was rejected from Main campus and last month I found out I have ADD. I called admissions and the counselor told me that appeals are rarely successful but mine is considered an extenuating circumstance. A minor upward trend in senior grades is not going to be enough to make them reconsider. If you applied into a specific major, then call and they may allow you to go to main for undecided. That’s your best bet.

Well I did receive major brain trauma when I got a concussion when I played football in 7th grade. I went to the doc and they told me I had trauma and it could affect my memory and comprehension. Any more advice? I really do think it did affect my learning ability
