@cashme I’m also an international student and I live in an even more remote area. But gauging from last year’s thread they’re just promotional meant to increase affinity for Reed and maintain interest( 3 months of waiting is a long time). offtopic is your screen name inspired by the ‘cashme ousside’ meme?
@AnArcticMonkey Last year, decisions came out in April. If it’s anything to base on, the trend will continue but Reed makes up for it with the epic box.
@AnArcticMonkey in the past all schools used to send snail mail, but most have now gone digital. Reed likes a more personal touch so they send out an actual box filled with a little confetti, a copy of the Iliad (I’m still to find out why Reed is in love with this book) and a handwritten( yes handwritten) letter from the dean.
However only domestic admits receive the box (apparently Reed doesn’t want to risk any of the boxes getting lost in international transit). International students get an e-mail and then receive a folder with the rest of the items much later.
@cashme Last year packages were shipped out on April first, this was however a Friday and so most admits received their packages the following week(something about not shipping over the weekends). This led to a lot of panic and anxiety, with some applicants resorting to check their FedEx trackers every five seconds.
@cashme In theory yes, international applicants are supposed to all be mailed decisions at once(before domestic applicants). Last year however e-mails were sent in waves which led to some international applicants receiving their acceptances/rejections much later.
In case people want to know, I don’t have perfect stats.
1520 SAT, 3.5 UW GPA (3.55 at mid term) with upward jump. My ECs are really strong, and so we’re my rec letters (I think. Didn’t see them). I didn’t interview because I found Reed too late on.
@Fangirl1999 nope, my dad told me about it. I’m not home. Won’t be able to open it for a few days. Hopefully they haven’t made a practice of sending boxes to rejects this year :o)
Okay, couldn’t resist. Had it opened for me. My parents sent pics.
Pencil, copy of the Iliad, notebook (I think that’s what it is).
The letter was signed by hand with a note from the dean of admissions. I’m not sure if all letters come with a personal note. Nothing about the box being early.
Until other people get boxes, there’s no way to know if the verbiage was atypical. It said stuff like “we know you’ll have a profound impact on our campus”, but everyone might get that. It is a selective school.
