ok.. so I was wondering what the deal is with the Regent Scholarships for the UC's. My friend was offered to compete for it or something but he isnt really that smart compared to everyone else.. he has like a 3.8 and a 2020 on the SAT's.. and UCB UCLA and UCSD have all sent him an invitation for the Regent Scholarship. Does this mean that he is already in? and does this mean that he will get this prestigious award? thanks!

Invitation for Regent's scholarship means he's in. Regent's is based primarily on academics but just like admissions, views the the application holistically (if I remember correctly). There could be something extra special about him. Maybe very challenging classes?

I know my year there were some seemingly strange Regent's offers. For example, this girl that went to Harvard did not receive Regents but I got waitlisted at Harvard and got Regents. It happens.

What is a regents scholarship?

What if you got invited to the honors program at UCI?

Or if UC Berkeley sent an e-mail insisting that you apply for Berkeley Alumni Scholarship?

Are these good signs? Or average?

onextreexhill,
Your friend could have written a compelling UC essay which drew their attention more than scores or even grades. (And/or, perhaps it was the content of his coursework.)

The Regents' varies somewhat by campus. Here's the link for Berkeley's:
