Regents, Leadership Scholarship, etc... Invitations

Okay I first got the email about some Leadership Award Alumni Scholarship. I then signed into my "MyBerkeley" Account (after recovering my password) and got info about the Regents Scholarship. What's the difference (if any) and the perks of each (if they are separate awards)? Can you get both simultaneously?

I already have one thing encouraging me to apply for Regents from UCLA -- the only other UC I applied to -- but I decided not to fill it out because I don't want to attend UCLA and money isn't a big issue (my parents can/will pay for me to attend wherever I want).

I assume these emails mean I got into Berkeley or that I probably will. I already got into Yale so I don't think I'm going to apply unless they r huge scholarships...

Your MyBerkeley talks to you about Regents already? Boy that makes me feel depressed.. :P

I also got the invitation to apply for the Regents Scholarship here's the text actually,

Dear Prospective Berkeley Student,

UC Berkeley’s California Alumni Association would like to invite you to apply for the Leadership Award Alumni Scholarship. The Leadership Award is merit-based and awards students who have taken leadership roles in their schools and communities. Scholarships are worth up to $12,500 over five years. It is one of the most prestigious scholarships at UC Berkeley.

The deadline is Wednesday February 20th, 2008 at 11:59pm.

Please visit California Alumni Association at UC Berkeley - Student Area for full details and eligibility requirements.

Please review that you meet all the eligibility criteria before beginning your application

We look forward to receiving your application! GO BEARS!

Please note that this email message does not in any way reflect your admission status. The alumni scholarship process is completely separate from the UC Berkeley admission selection process. You are no more or less likely to be admitted to UC Berkeley because you have received this invitation and your decision to apply or not for Alumni Scholarships will not affect your admissions status.

You are receiving this email because we thought you might be interested in this opportunity. If you would like to be opted out of future email communications, please e-mail scholarships@alumni.berkeley.edu with "Unsubscribe" in the subject line and we would be happy to oblige. If you do this, you will no longer receive email communications from the California Alumni Association’s Alumni Scholarship Office and will not receive any information regarding Alumni Scholarships.

I got really excited too thinking this was a sign that i got in but then i read the bottom, so I'll still apply but i wouldn't get too excited over this email.

That is only the alumni scholarship invitation, very different from the Regents offer. Alumni leadership does not indicate acceptance, but Regents does.

Do they send an email regarding Regents or is it just on "My Berkeley" account? Anyone know about how UCLA notifies you about Regents?

^^ For UCB, check "MyBerkeley", and for UCLA, they sent you a letter on January 24. If you don't get one, don't worry too much, only a small fraction of the applicants got these.

Just realize that UCB also sent e-mail for Regent and Chancellor Scholarship.

How do you know Regents = Acceptance? Is there any data/source to back this up?

When I got Regents invitation two years ago, the first thing the interviewing professor told me when I walked into his office was, "Well, congratulations. You're in. You get to know a month early."

Besides, think logically. Why the hell would they take the pain to actually interview you even before the acceptances are out? They aren't going to interview you and tell you you could stay overnight, then reject you in March.

Regents = full tuition if you have high need, but is a small, yet prestigious stipend if your need is not high.

Alumni is a MERIT of $1500-$2500 per year, and if you are a need student, it reduces your self -help (loans) first, not grants, so very nice to add.

does berkeley ever explicitly say anywhere on their website abt regents=admission? i know it’s most likely, but i still worry!

Regent is actually only 2000 not full tuition.

Full tuition is blue and gold plan iirc

peterr86 is wrong; the RC scholarship will give you
“cost of attendance”/years - “expected Family Contribution (determined by FAFSA)”/year which is defined as your "financial need. the scholarship fulfills your financial need as determined by uncle Sam
or
$1000/year

whichever is higher

I’m a prospective transfer student anxiously and pensively awaiting an invitation to the Regents Scholarship, but I’m not sure if I would make the cut.

I’m not need-based or anything, so money isn’t an issue.
My UC GPA is 3.74. Is this too low for Regents? I’ll understand if it is, I’m just curious where the cut-off with it is. I wrote strong personal statements and have a great upward trend…not sure if that matters at all.

Thanks to anybody who can give me a realistic opinion of my eligibility for Regents.

My son got the UCB regents email but not the letter from UCLA. Is it typical that you get one or the other but not both? I assume if you didn’t get the letter from UCLA by now, you won’t. Its too bad because from what I can figure out, the UCLA package is better (more $, on campus parking, etc)

My S got both (UCB and UCLA) regents so I think they made their decision independently.

@emil your gonna need a near 4.0 gpa for transfer like 3.95+ gpa

My D got both also.

Alright, it’s all good. Thanks peterr!

I have a student who was invited to the Cal Regent’s interview so I called the scholarship office to see what I can dig up. This is what I figured out after deciphering the cryptic conversation I had with the scholarship office:

1) The admissions office has control issues. The scholarship office is not “allowed” to tell students they are accepted because the admissions office is in charge of that.

2) When I asked if the interview is an indicator that a student has a very good chance of being admitted but that it wasn’t guaranteed, the rep said “you may go a step beyond that.” My interpretation of this charade is that the student is admitted if offered an interview for Regent’s, but for whatever reason (control issues?) the admissions office is telling the scholarship office to keep mum about the status of the acceptance.
