So I'm curious, how many classes do you guys apply for? Well, my biggest worry is that I won't get into the classes that I want to. I'm thinking of mass registering and then drop 'em later; I'd say around 30+ units. Any advice? By the way, I go to De Anza. And yes, I'm an incoming freshman. "GIMME YOUR LUNCH MONEY!"

I have seen people from online but never heard of anyone in my school who takes 30 or more units. Pasadena City College is where i went to. If it is your first semester, I suggest you go with the minimum, unless you are in a rush, and the purpose is to get to know the school and adapt the environment. I had seen many students day in and out exist and enter the college without ever attending any activities or clubs or anything.

Furthermore, of my second semester I tried 16 units and it was useless in my personal opinion since all my teachers are either part time or just first year non-experienced teachers. You get As, but I ask, have you challenge yourself a bit.

The next semester my load was decreased to 12 units again, which is the minimum requirement, but 2 of my teachers on the schedule was the hardest and school famous; thus whenever you say you are taking his/her class, the next question is, “how is your life?” Nevertheless, I consider this to be worthier.
Quality rather than quantity.

I usually register for 15 semester units, and then drop one of the classes. I would imagine that you need to petition to register for such a high number of units (30+).

Well, as I have already mentioned, I’m an incoming freshman, so my knowledge is very limited. Now, I’ve said 30+ units, but I meant figuratively. The purpose of this thread was so I could see what experienced students do. And my other fear is not completing the classes I need to transfer. I hope that clears up things for everyone, and sorry for poorly articulating my questions.

The only reason to do that is if you are uncertain of the classes you want to take. Most colleges will NOT allow you to register for more than 20 units anyways… But, the only reason I would “mass register” and then “drop later” is if you’re uncertain of which classes you will want to remain in! It is possible to take 20 credits in one semester if you’re highly organized and motivated.

So, to answer your question… yes, mass register if you are uncertain of which classes you are wanting to take just to make certain you are in… if you already know which classes you want, then just register for those!

I agree with UCSCMelissa. And if you know where you want to transfer, and what you’re going to major in, make sure you knock those prerequisites out of the way. Math and English too.

Thanks guys!

I’m going have to disagree with @difanchen. It’s always good to challenge yourself but to what extent. If it costs you a lower grade or even possibly denial of admission then is it really worth it? Plus when you apply I’m pretty sure the UCs do not know or care who your teacher is/was.

As far as credits I’m also an incoming freshman. I actually took a summer course to get a head start. In the fall I’ll be taking 15 credits, 5 classes. Like many said on here my community college has this policy that you cannot exceed a certain amount of courses. I wonder how some of these students take 30+ credits.

Mitch, how was the class? can you give me your POV? I’m thinking of signing up for 16 units, four classes. However, a friend of mine at UCSD summerbridge is telling me to just take three classes b/c it’ll be hell.

16 units should be okay. 18 is still okay. 21 is hard enough for me >_< A 4.0 is definitely possible.

I had 15 units during my first semester (calc1, english, psych, philosophy). It was easy, but I didn’t really care that time. I mean I didn’t study like I should. Still ended up with a 4.0.

Then I got 21 units my second semester. It was mentally stimulating, but I hate liberal arts classes. Got two Bs and a C from my general education classes lol. Definitely possible to get a 4.0 that semester, but choose your professors carefully!

I’m taking 14 units for fall, my lightest load ever but I’m nervous because I’d be taking classes with two of the supposedly hardest professors in my school.

Oh and I’m in San Jose too. Evergreen to be exact.

Hey I have a question. What is crashing a course exactly?

^
Basically you go to a class you haven’t registered then ask the professor if he/she could give you an add code to formally accept you in the class.
