“Many people have said FSU is prettier. I know we’re not really talking about aesthetics. But I’ve always thought that north Florida is very pretty, more creeks and hills and trees and what not.”

Um hello… Ever heard of the University of Florida Campus Historic District???

“While I have always thought Gainesville is a cool college town I have heard a bunch of complaints from some kids that say there’s just nothing to do.”

What is there for people to do in Tallahassee that people in Gainesville can’t do?

^Because college students would be interested in visiting those? I can only speak for my school but high school students perceive UF as being significantly better than FSU, not as peers. Also Tallahassee does not have a good reputation.

in my high school tallahassee had a terrible reputation.
unless you were the kind of person who got wasted every other day. but even those kids thought it was notorious for hard drugs.
not that no one thought gainesville was full of booze, but no one went up to gainesville to party. they all went to tally.

but that could have easily been just my school.

^
True but, at the risk of over-generalizing, I do agree that most high seniors will perceive UF as a better school simply based off admissions selectivity.

Think about it, the top 75th percentile of SAT scores at FSU are the bottom 25th percentile at UF.

FSU 1700-1930 SAT

UF: 1930-2060

Combine that with higher GPA’s and it is no surprise why UF has a much lower acceptance rate, hence the public perception it is a better school.

I know many HONORS students at FSU who were outright rejected from UF.

In regards to student caliber, UF blows FSU out of the water.

that last statement is going a little too far. being a step above =/= blowing out of the water. blowing out of the water doesn’t involve any kind of metric whatsoever and is just abrasive rhetoric.

that being said, this is only in terms of admission. it doesn’t say anything about the quality of the graduate.

I have heard numerous students say that they like UF but there isn’t much to do in Gainesville. And there isn’t. It’s a tiny town that’s ALL the university.

And for the record, I have never heard one person say that UF is better looking than FSU. It just isn’t. Gainesville is a swamp, and Tallahassee is bigger I believe nicer.

I’m not saying that FSU is better academically than UF, because it isn’t. UF is a better school, yeah, but I’m just saying that a lot of people choose a college based on more reasons than just the academic reputation. Location is important, as students will be living there for at least the next four years.

If I had to choose between living in gville or Tally, I would choose Tally in a heartbeat. Tallahassee isn’t only focused on its college, like Gainesville is.

^ You said UF was boring and I stated facts why it was not:

UF has over 800 student organizations for the students to partake in. Gainesville also has a number of state parks, and we also have Lake Alice which is located on campus. We have 5 performing arts venues, 2 university owned museums, 3 student gyms, and the best athletic department in the country. In addition, we have the best career services according to Princeton Review, and UF Alumni are renown for going out of their way to hire their own. UF is also very close to Jacksonville, Orlando, and Tampa and the beaches are only a short distance away.

No, in fact I said the opposite. I said that Gainesville was boring but that its main ATTRACTION is UF.

A large university is always going to be fun. But you can’t say that Gainesville is a major town with a lot happening, because its not. And that’s not bad, small towns are nice, but it’s not exactly a hotbed for things to do on the weekends.

vacationsays, then why aren’t you encouraging people to go to UNF, USF, FIU/UM, and UCF??? They are in very large cities with plenty to do on the weekends???

Hey you can dream! But, at the end of the day Austin will always be Austin and Gainesville will always be Gainesville. ;)

My son absolutely loved UF and chose it over UT mainly because he’d already been to hs and most of his friends were going to UT. The 4 years he was at UF were the haydays! He even had front row seats to last year’s natl champ and shook Tebow’s hand after UF won the game. Pretty awesome stuff! But he got out of Gainesvegas as quickly as he could!

Loves being part of the Gator Nation, but 4 years is plenty!

i still dont understand how tally has more things to do on the weekends than gainesville. neither of them are fun towns for anyone not involved with school.

goufgators:
Because it never came up? And I’m by no means encouraging people to stay AWAY from small towns, I’m just pointing out that there is not too much to do.

If I went to UF I know I would have fun. Same with FSU. I’m just trying to point out that gville is a town not exactly known for a bunch of stuff to do. Which is why there is a whole bunch of on campus activity, whereas if you came to UM everyone is on South Beach clubbing.

I don’t know why people are getting so upset. So what if Gainesville is a small town with not much happening? Everyone still loves it.

I love Gainesville the way it is because t is the perfect atmosphere for college students. Unfortunately, you think “having something to do” means going clubbing. As SSobick already mentioned, there are many things to do in Gainesville besides clubbing. Being in a college town means practically everyone around you is your age with similar goals and hobbies.

I grew up in Miami and I had absolutely no problems living in Gainesville. In fact, it has been one of the best experiences I’ve ever had in my life.
