OP: Unfortunately English 1B is a really important requirement for the UCs. I’m not sure what the equivalent is in Hawaii, but I know that in CA they definitely would not let you waive it with another literature or creative writing course. The classes you took probably prepared you in English just as well (although probably in more specialized ways), but that’s the way it is :(

same here, rejected due to ONE prereq not done, applied as sociology major all prereqs done except calculus which I tried to add in 4 different colleges but they were all full and they said they won’t let me take it in summer

I am pretty sure all prereq done with a 3.7 vs missing 1 prereq with a 4.0 is better.

@thebigshow…I took all the classes available here in Hawaii. I assumed they would consider upper division lit classes had more than enough “critical thinking and writing” to fulfill their requisites. And I agree, apparently prereq’s come before GPA.

@Tessa…I know 1b is really important. Problem is it’s nonexistent in Hawaii. Here English 1a+1b = English 100. That’s it. After that you get specialized lit classes or stuff like term paper writing, business writing, etc. I assumed, since Cal does this, that UCLA would take the classes and evaluate them as a whole since critical thinking takes place whether you’re writing about flies in the Congo, Romeo and Juliet, or the shoes you bought last month. But whatever, the UC’s just make it really difficult for OOS students. Sad but totally true.

Math and english pre reqs are the most crucial I believe.

@ktb5555

I totally agree with you: Math and English are very important. UCB/Haas pre-requisites must be recent, taken < 5 years. This semester I’m repeating English 1A (although my Engl 3, 7 & 44 are more recent) & Calc I (even if I’ve taken Calc 2 & 3 in the past as well). I’m an adult student parent so I can only take a few classes while working full-time. It feels like I’ve been going to school forever but getting there slowly…I’m keeping my fingers crossed until the 30th!

I had problems finding Engl 1A & Calc I as well (my local CC has less classes this semester) but I searched around the Bay Area and watched religiously for someone to drop. I currently attend 3 different CC’s (at least 1 is an online class).

@transferbound I am sorry, I didn’t clarify that the 3.25 is applicable only to my major. As far for the overall GPA for transfer applicants, I am not sure yet.
