Rent a car or public transportation?

My son and I will be flying in to visit Pittsburgh for the first time. I was wondering if I should rent a car or not. I'm not sure because in NYC with traffic and parking...a car is ridiculous and you are much better off with mass transit. I have no idea what to expect with Pittsburgh. Thank you for any advice.

From what I have been told, parking on/around the Oakland campus is near impossible, but I would imagine that others could provide more substantial answers than I could to this question.

There is parking available for visitors to Pitt’s campus at various garages - Soldiers and Sailors garage is where you would be directed to park for Pitt Admissions events and visits. Most hotels have available parking (usually for a charge) and in downtown the City of Pittsburgh has a lot of parking garages that charge much less than you’d pay in NYC.

Pittsburgh is not the easiest city to drive in especially with all of the snow but parking would not be the main impediment.

Most of the public transportation is on busses. Students use them all the time but they might not be ideal (long rides to/from the airport, waiting in the cold, figuring out which bus to take) for a short visit. Cabs are another option. They’re plentiful but the cost adds up.

I took a cab from the airport bc I didn’t know any better. But I took a bus back to the airport. It stops right on campus–really easy and cheap with limited stops. It’s a decent compromise.

Yes, there is a city bus that goes from the airport to campus. It’s very inexpensive.

Where are you staying? If you’re in the Wyndham or the Holiday Inn Select Oakland, there is no need to rent a car.

I stayed at the Holiday Inn and it was incredibly convenient. Can’t be beat in my opinion.

Thanks for the input. We are staying at the Wyndham.

The Wyndham is very convenient, and you’ll be close to Pamela’s for breakfast! Also, in case you decide to rent a car, you can park at the Wyndham for about $15 a day. That’s what we do when we’re moving my daughter in or out.

Are you attending the accepted students’ program? I remember that there were free bus tours of the city organized by Pitt, with narration provided by a Pitt Pathfinder. So you will feel as if you had seen the campus and the city. We’re from NYC also. My daughter is a junior. Let me know if you have any questions! Best of luck. Pitt has a lot to offer.

ssmom62–we are coming from NY also (a second visit) accepted student program Feb 27

We’re coming in also for the accepted student program on Feb. 27. ( from NJ ). Looking forward to it.

If your real initials are MBJ on a name tag, I’ll introduce myself!

The Holiday Inn on campus is great, but it often sells out.
