I have been getting average grades in OK classes but now... I HAVE A D IN ALGEBRA II IT'S A 60% AND I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT TO DO??!!!??

I have a tutor, but even that isn't helping. I have a meeting with my counselor tomorrow to talk about alternatives and I want as many opinions as possible on what I should do and anything else you can think of...

And do you think this will severely hurt my chances for admissions to let’s say… a UC or NYU…

Retake it, and don’t take AP Calculus.

Yeah retake

Retake it. Whatever math you take next, you’ll do better if you understand algebra better than you do now.

Sorry you’re struggling, but huge respect for confronting the problem and trying to do something about it!

Thank you guys so much! But I have now (somehow…magically I think) brought it up to a 67%… should I retake it if I get a C?

Yes, I do. If you take math long enough, you’ll eventually reach a point at which your classes don’t really build directly on the one that came before. But that’s a long way off. Any math you take for the rest of high school will rely on your knowledge of Algebra II. If you have a C- knowledge of Algebra II, it’s going to be mighty hard to get an A-, or even a B-, in Precalculus (or Functions & Trig, or whatever you take).

I don’t think you could get into NYU …and a UC depends on which one there’s vast variance in their quality.

SIKORSKY- Um, it turns out that I will only be in town (actually my country of residence) for the second semester of summer school… should I still take it over if it’s only one semester???
MISSOURIBOY- At this point I don’t care what UC, any one will do I really don’t care at this point…
*Sorry for being a bother…

Well, that’s a complication! I think so. I think some additional practice in algebra is better than none. But a whole Algebra II class would be better still.

I’d suggest online, but I don’t know whether there’s a really good online algebra program for people whose main thing is not math. That might be a question that’s worth asking in a new thread.
