Asking this question on behalf of a friend, any responses are appreciated.

Goal: to transfer to UC Davis

Took English 1A (3 units) during HS at SJCC as part of a college-transfer program, received a C grade. Retook English 1A (3 units) at Mission College, received a B. I retook this thinking the English 1A course I took at SJCC wouldn't count because it was during high school.

Question: Which of these grades will count toward my UC GPA, or will both? Do I get 6 units for it, or just 3. I called Davis and talked to a rep who sounded like a student and was hesitant in answering my question, but said that both the B and the C grades will count towards the GPA AND I will get 6 units. Has anyone had any experience with something of this sort?

Took U.S History during HS at SJCC as part of the same college program mentioned above, received a D.

Question: I plan on retaking it this summer at Mission College. The class is technically the same exact class but obviously at a different college. Will there be any issues in replacing that original D grade?

Thank you very much for any help you can offer!

Short answer: the B grade overrides the C grade, meanning “only” the B grade counts toward total GPA.

So I too, took Eng 1A in 10th grade and got a D. and took it two years ago at a different CC, and got an A. In my uc app and tag app, the system automatically knows that both are counted toward Eng 1A class, and it only takes the latter.
Besides the message from the online application, I went to a counselor who told me explicitly that I don’t need to do academic renewal to get rid of the D grade I got.
So for the same reason, I guess if the two US history classes are the same, the system will overrides the older/worse-graded one by the newer/better one.

Thing is, you got a D, which isn’t considered a passing grade. I actually passed the course with a C when I took it in HS. Would it still be replaced by that B?

The first passing grade is the one that gets factored into your GPA unfortunately. Also, you only receive credit for taking the course once. So in your friend’s situation, the C grade is the one that is factored into their GPA and they would only receive 3 credits.

Sorry about that but let’s take a look at the experiment I made below.

I am simulating a similar situation of yours on uctap.universityofcalifornia.edu.

Here’s an actual course I took,
Berkeley City College Spring 2010:
ECON 1 Principles of Economics (Macro-Economics) 3 units, got B
Overall: 3.55 92.50/138.75

And I added a fake course to my app.
Contra Costa College Spring 2013:
ECON 220 Introduction to Macroeconomics Principles 3 units, got A
Overall: 3.57 95.50/143.25

So the conclusion is that if the grade is not below C, it cannot be overriden. And both credits are included as the rep said. Sorry about my previous wrong comment.

@blackdelias, you are saying that only the C will affect my gpa, and I will not get an additional 3 units for retaking it and getting a B (which will not affect my GPA) ?

and @andrenvq57, you are saying that the B can not negate the C grade, but I will get the the units for both courses?
