I am a sophomore at a Georgia high school. I've been looking into Georgia State University, but am also looking at UGA as another option, or my "dream school. I have a 3.0 (3.56 weighted) end of first semester GPA, but only because of a horrendous freshman year. I am curious as to what I need to work on pertaining to GPA, SAT, and ACT scores. I am looking at taking some AP classes during junior year to possibly ignite my admissions status. Along with grades and coursework, I have some community service work involved in my resume as well. I'd love some input, thank you!

Look at the announced stats for this 2014 Early Action that were just released. Use these to review your current situation and to create a plan. What trajectory are your PSAT’s? (use the PSAT to project you SAT scores) Are you on the similar testing path to the 2014 class? What is your planned course rigor (AP’s are not optional)? Having a bad freshman year is better than a bad junior year so you can make up lost ground. If you are NOT on track in the GRADES, RIGOR, AND TESTING, you have to ask yourself if you can get there. If yes, develop your plan NOW. You can plan your courses for Soph/JR year and project your GPA.

If NO, are your OTHER qualifications, which are reviewed in regular admission strong enough to bridge the gap?

In a few weeks after the application crush is over, sit down with your HS counselor to discuss your goals and create a plan.
