Residence Halls

I'm going to Miami this fall and I'm trying to decide what residence hall I want to live in. Since most of the living learning community themes weren't really anything I'm interested in, I was just going to pick student created programming. Then I found out that I got into the Oxford Scholars program, so I'm trying to decide if I want to live in the honors halls or not. I'm kind of hesitant just because I'm a pretty social person and I'm a little afraid everyone in there will be really, really studious or somewhat anti-social. So, if anyone, especially anyone that goes/went to Miami could offer me any advice, I'd really appreciate it; thanks!

The honors dorms are in no way antisocial, LOL. They're a little quieter than other dorms on weekends, but it's not like everyone sits in his or her room and studies the whole day. Have you visited Miami?

As long as in you're in a dorm on the north side of campus, you'll be fine. ;)

Okay, thanks. Yeah, I've visited it twice. I was actually just up there on Monday for open house. It's so gorgeous. I'm pretty much in love with it, lol.

Rodlo-
Just curious, why the North Quad?

I am going to MUn ext year too, and I had to pick between Honors dorms and Western Campus (for architecture program) and it was tough because I was told the honors dorms have air conditioning...just something I heard

I am most likely to go MIAMI 2008 fall, I like quiet dorms and not too small, can someone share me which dorms are fit?

CSHow.
They re-introduced the Architecture Dorm? Sorry to hear that! It was not available last year, and I was glad. I know there is a strong push on the part of some faculty who think that living together is a big plus. It does offer some support (and partners to walk back and forth to studio at all hours). Personally, however, I think that archi. students already spend FAR too much time with the other Architecture majors in studio, and that it is good to meet others outside the program.

Do most Honors students go to the honors dorm, or do some pick other communities? I'm Honors, but I'm also interested in the international community. I'm not sure if I want to do that or just do the honors dorm.

Also, are the honors dorms any nicer than the others?

kjofkw:
they did not re-introduce architecture dorms. i entered miami 2006-7, the last year for that program. i was actually under the impression that a lot of the arch. faculty wanted to end that situation. while i do agree arch majors need to meet others, i feel that we really do since we do have to take main campus classes, others join sororities and frats, choir, and all other sorts of organizations. I think the freshman class has suffered somewhat from not living with one another because it took them much longer to know and be comfortable with everyone, making them less likely to offer helpful critiques of work and high caliber group work, among other things.

I am also an honors student and they can choose to live anywhere. Miami really pushes for you to live in the honors dorms, but it is not required by any means. Feel free to choose whichever community! I don't know if you've seen the dorms on campus, but I can tell you that Honors is usually in Tappan and Emerson halls and the international dorm has generally been in Clawson Hall. And as far as I have seen, the honors dorms really aren't any nicer. The rooms might be a shade bigger and maybe a little nicer, but they aren't really any different.

D lives in Clawson on Western Campus and loves it. She doesn't want to live anywhere else. She loves the diversity and the exposure to the different cultures.

Chrys,
Tappan is airconditioned, which was a big plus in August / September. I do not know about other Honors dorms.

I chose the Mosaic....what dorms are in that group and where are they on campus???

since all of you are students there now I was wondering if you could help me out. What’s the best dorms for freshman? Oh and I am not in the honors program. Also would you guys recommend the living-learning communities?

I believe that non-honors can still live in honors dorms. If this is your preference, you can check it out. It reaslly does not matter, as long as nobody is bothering you. Tappan / Wells were fine.
