residential colleges

sharp: maybe this is a stupid question, but why do you say some colleges are richer than others? isn’t the university’s wealth equally distributed ?

Alumni from different colleges give different amounts of money donations to their own colleges

This is the first time I’ve heard a detailed account of what Silliman has to offer and I’m liking it a lot! Hopefully that glitch was correct because I’m looking forward to staying at the best residential college at Yale lol

From what I understand: the individual colleges no longer solicit donations from their alums and they cannot donate to their college’s individual endowments any longer. However, JE just happened to build a huge one before the practice was discontinued.

Wow, Sharp123, thank you for that detailed breakdown! Sure, it’s no help for getting us IN to the college we want, but it is very interesting to see the differences between the colleges. I stand by my original wish- crossing my fingers and hoping it ain’t Morse! Let’s just hope that I won’t jinx myself by doing that!

Oh and T26E4, do you know why they stopped the practice of soliciting donations from alums? It seems like if they want to contribute to their individual college versus to the whole university, nothing should stop them… even if some colleges are filthy rich compared to others!

Well, the disparate nature of some endowments is exactly why they ended the practice. They didn’t want an “arms race” for college-specific funds, I guess. Also it was diverting funds from the general alumni donation fund (probably the bigger reason). There you go. Practice ended but monies already given could stay and grow (such as JE’s).

@Smart: 99% of that seems entirely subjective

Can somebody do a more detailed breakdown of Trumbull, similar to the breakdown of the res colleges a few posts back?

Or at least evaluate them all on the same five (or however many) criteria.

Trumbull
-Not Morse
-Sucks

Sorry about your luck

Lol MSauce, you reacted completely differently from the way I did to your ‘luck’ with Morse.

@TheAscendancy:

– — .-. … . … … - … . -… . … -!

Sharp’s rankings are pretty accurate (i would perhaps put davenport above je, but silliman is probably my second favorite college), though you’ll love the college you’re in. especially you morsels and stilesians. you’ll have really cool renovated colleges, you’re close to the gym, durfee and lawrence are awesome and stiles and morse tend to have really cool people and lots of personality. all of my best friends are in morse and stiles.

@djdopeslap

-.-. — --. -. … - … …- . / -… … … … — -. .- -. -.-. . / .-. . -… …- -.-. - … — -.

Well I’m not going to translate the Morse code.

But I’m not surprised people celebrated avoiding Morse. If they were smart enough to accurately judge the best residential college Yale would have put them in Morse.

Trumbull freshman live in bingham, many of them in the tower (the tallest building on old campus - 9 stories, with an elevator). Bingham also has the laundry room for OC south, which is convenient

Trumbull is well situated, but very small. Many juniors get annexed (i think to Arnold hall this year, which is a good building adjacent to davenport). It has three courtyards, one large central one that borders the main library (SML), and two very small ones to each side. The dining hall is quite nice, i think.

One of the small courtyards is called potty court, because there’s a small statue of a man sitting on a potty on a roof in the courtyard. I believe the senior class gets to repaint the potty man every year.

I don’t know that much about trumbull… actually. Maybe other people could comment on more fun things (college traditions, etc.).

Thanks for the info. What do you mean by annexed?

And do you think Trumbull’s small size makes it easier to get involved with competitive things like FCC and Trumbull College Council/intermurals because of the fewer students?

Could you describe Saybrook too? Preferrably without reference to Branford (somehow I get the idea Saybrook would be more appealing if it were anywhere else other than next to Branford).

Saybrooks cheats in IMs (quite egregiously, too - only JE and TD are their equals) and has a terrible dining hall. The architecture is quite pretty, I suppose, though you get the sense they got the short end of the stick in the partition of Harkness Quadrangle.

(Basically, it’s a very rectangular college that seems to tower up and surround you. The basement is shared with Branford and mediocre in quality. From what I’ve been in, the rooms are nice, and a fair amount of partiers live in Saybrook, so the social life is pretty active, as is the college spirit. The college cheer is better than most, though easily spun by opposing colleges into clever insults.)

Any commentary on Davenport?
