residential colleges

Sharp’s rankings are completely arbitrary. I do agree that Silliman is a great college, but not everything about it is great. Depending on what you do, it can be far from your center of life at Yale. The dining hall is large and has pretty good food, but the kitchen has THE WORST layout of all the colleges. You have to make a single file line to get your food, which makes no sense to anyone in their right mind. At peak hours, you have to wait like 5-10 mins to get your food, which is considerably longer than at other colleges.

JE should not be anyone’s 2nd choice. It does have a lot of money, but is totally stingy with it. The master and dean could possibly be one of the worst master-dean pairs of all Yale College. The dean is an ass and the master has absurd, strict rules for absolutely no reason.

Davenport and Pierson are pretty nice.

But, each college has its own perks and bad things, which you learn to live with because you’ll love your college no matter what. I’m in Calhoun, and I won’t deny that we have a REALLY small college, pretty unpredictable housing (most juniors get annexed), and a small courtyard. BUT, we have a great dean and master (their function as professors might be different, but they serve the college well), our dining hall staff is great, I love our library (personally), our basement is pretty nice (at least the bigger common areas), Bingham is in my opinion not any worse than any of the other old campus housing. Point is = ups and downs.

I really think that you guys should relax a bit about your RC assignments. The excitement is great, but I think it’ll better serve you if you get to explore some of the college on your own instead of having people tell you before you even get on campus. It’s boring and while everyone else is having fun and discovering things together, you’ll be bored pretty quickly. Just my opinion though…

Hey, is that Morse code djdopeslap :))

They’re mostly arbitrary, but not completely. They’re kind of aligned with the YDN survey results, and the general perceptions of people on campus.

Regarding the Silliman lines, they only take so much time so consistently if you are a novice at dealing with them or know literally no one eating there. It’s quite easy to wander into the servery past the line if you are endeavoring to look at the food offered or access the deli/salad bar on the left. All it takes is a quick survey of the line to see if there is a gap near the main dishes (someone is getting entree A, holding up the line, entree B is unattended, and you swoop in to get entree B or see if you know anyone. It’s not successful every time, but I found most of my forays into the Silliman dining hall at “peak” times were shortened by adept navigation of the line.

Sorry Sharp, your ratings are bogus.

I’m not going to address all of the outrageous claims you made, but I will defend Morse and Stiles from you and all of the other haters who don’t know what they’re talking about. In fact, I already have. Twice. But I will keep reposting this so that incoming frosh aren’t biased by your anti-Saarinen propaganda or the completely skewed YDN survey.

And if you are lucky enough to be placed in Morse or Stiles, and you have any questions or doubts, please PLEASE message me so I can assure you of your good fortune.

Does anybody know what’s the date we find out ‘officially’ what college we’re in? Does that come in the mail or through email?

We’re told via snail mail, which is sent out on June 25th.

Can anybody give some me some detailed insight for TD? As far as I know it is a college with high spirit but it’s pretty far from everything…

amciw - It probably takes longer because people keep cutting the line. It’s not that serious of an issue with Silliman; I don’t actually care. I don’t particularly like eating there anyways. Regardless, I think it’s a dumb setup for the serving area.

I also don’t particularly trust the YDN survey. And opinions vary a lot around campus as well.

Prostbr - TD is a beautiful college. You JUST missed Master T, who was supposed to be an amazing master. It’s also a small, and seems to have a pretty tight knit community.

Pierson boasts legendary Master G, as well as a great dean. In terms of facilities, Pierson’s basement is impressive and hard to beat, and upperclassman housing is lovely.

Those who appreciate Georgian architecture (which, after all, is much more authentic to New England than faux Gothic) will love Pierson’s courtyard and tower, which are very beautiful in a quiet, elegant, stately way… what some would call “classy.” The only downside is that the architecture makes it reminiscent of that other school in Cambridge… Pierson could easily stand alongside Lowell or one of the other Houses. (Actually, Lowell IS Pierson’s ‘sister’ house).

Having said that about Pierson, going to Yale is a great experience, no matter where you live… and most people end up loving their residential college, no matter what it is.

So I haven’t gotten my housing list yet, while everyone else from my town received theirs 2 days ago. Based on the previously released information, I am supposed to be in BK. I’m leaving the country in 3 days so I won’t be able to check my mail for a long time.
I was wondering whether any of you had the same problem. Also I’d really appreciate it if anyone could somehow show me the BK list so I can be sure that I was assigned to a residential college.
Having to sleep on the street come August would not be cool…
Thanks guys.

How is Davenport?

Davenport is very nice, and the freshman housing in Welch Hall is among the best on the Old Campus.
