I believe that it is unfair for students who do not receive wireless internet in their dorm rooms. Some or many lucky ones do not have to pay a minimum amount of $180 a year for an access to the internet, while others pay $180 or possibly more. Why doesn't the university or even the Student Government take actions regarding this situation? I am sure our tuition/room fees will be suffice for the school to cover this cost.

Chill out.... I'm sure the university is in the process of expanding/reinforcing the wireless coverage. Just be happy that we get it in every single classroom. A lot (I'd probably say most) schools don't even have this.

Are you failing to understand that the wireless for the whole campus is set at a very low amount? after 500 megabytes of data is used you are OUT and you're stuck on a dial up speed. I would use the wireless just during class because I lived off campus and I would usually spend maybe half of the 500 alotted a week. Anyone who lives on campus would use it even more because there would be class time and the rest of the time when you're not in class.

I don't even see what the big deal is, if you were to live off campus like in an apartment you're going to be spending more for internet.

I just really isn't feasible to think that 500 MB a week would last you unless you barely ever use the computer. I don't know if you've had to deal with a situation where your bandwidth has been limited, if you have cable or DSL at home you don't experience that.

But think about it. If you download a music album (illegally or legally) there's 100 MB right there, that's 1/5 of your wireless internet space. If you download a TV episode that's 350 MB right there. If you download a song that's 6 MB right there. If you download a movie that's about 700 mb at the minimum, you wouldn't even be able to download it all.

Most off campus dorms don't even give free internet so really there's no reason that you SHOULD NOT have to pay.

I'd guess that most people who live in any campus at UT would be purchasing ResNet because it's giving them more speed and is faster. So it's not really unfair at all.

anyone have any new info about ResNet?

wow…way to dig up a 3 year old thread.

ResNet, from my understanding, is still the same concept. Internet packages are tiered, depending on how much BW you use. Sites like hulu can drain your BW pretty fast.

Apogee at Towers and Castilian is the best – ResNEt limits the bandwidth of what you can download. So, after one tv show, you might be DONE for the month on campus. Also, as a side note – Castilian charges for internet (but its worth it IMO) - BUT you can also pick up the campus wireless for free sometimes from the campus view of that building – my buddy does it all the time.

Is there free wireless internet around campus? Like in the libraries or classes? Also if you’re living in Dobie with bad internet, is it possible to sign up for internet with an outside company?

how much bandwidth does online gaming take up?

My friend played CS: Source a lot in Blanton and I think for the most part he was ok with the bandwidth. Normal web browsing is fine, but gaming and downloading stuff really sucks up your BW.

do you have to purchase your own resnet for your dorm or do you only need one per room?

what im asking is, do you and your roommate split the price?

if its like everywhere else, the internet companies around here block the use of routers. So you can share with someone I suppose but both people can’t be on at the same time.

wait is resnet only for dorm rooms or for any time you use the internet on campus? im still slightly confused about that.

i never knew this would be a huge issue. my state university which i took some classes at has free wireless almost everywhere and isnt limited. so this is a first for me.

resnet is only for residents. Every UT student has access to the wireless on campus for free.

Every UT student has access to a limited amount of wireless for free per week.
ResNet substantially increases this amount. I believe you use your ResNet bandwidth anywhere on campus, not just in the dorms, but I’m not positive.

so can u stick with wireless and be done??

so then if we brought a wireless router to the dorm, which ‘tier’ would we need to get?

or can we not even bring routers at all?

this is to “grandpabuzz”…if you plan on using limewire to download songs then i suggest you dont do it at UT…because last year they fined a TON of people including my brother $3000 for downloading music off of limewire.

Limewire is one of the least safe ways to download music.

I usually download mp3s from the internet through my web browser. It doesn’t need any programs besides IE or Firefox. I probably won’t risk it anyway.

ok so all residents at the dorm need to purchase ResNet…correct??

you should purchase it if you think that you’ll go over the 500mg bandwidth that you are given for free, which most people do. but to answer you question, yes. resnet stands for residence hall network :)
