Restaurants in C'Ville

Got my restaurant recommendations from an alum (my econ teacher) today! Bodo’s and Take It Away came up, and he said Duners is good too, but that’s a nicer restaurant.

Duner’s is great…but it’s out in Ivy (it might technically be in Crozet).

[Duners Restaurant](http://www.dunersrestaurant.com/)

Dean J, this is slightly off topic, but I can’t post on the blog right now (iPhone). But, for tommorow, do you believe Sperrys will suffice. Or, do you recommend athletic shoes?
Thanks

I recommend Revolutionary Soup as a great place for lunch. There’s a location on 14th street on the Corner and another one near the trolley stop on the downtown mall. Really good salads, sandwiches, wraps, soup, and very affordable  Eating out in Charlottesville is a real treat- it can be fun to just stroll along the Corner or the Downtown Mall and try whatever looks good! Boylan Heights, Bodo’s, and Fry’s Spring Station are a few other favorites of mine.

Only if they are the classic ones with the brown top and white bottom.

Just kidding. Wear whatever you want as long as it’s comfortable for walking. :)

I’ve got both pairs in my bag.but, the pink canvas ones are definitely more comfortable than the leather. And a little more spiffy in my opinion ;)

Just a couple more recs:

Maya – Great dinner near downtown.
The Boat House – Good for lunch or dinner; it’s one of our favorites (located on 29).
Basil – Wonderful Mediterranean food (healthy). It’s located on the Corner across from Boylan.
Lemongrass – Great Thai that you can order as spicy as you want (1-10). It’s also on the corner down from Boylan.
Little John’s – This deli is on the Corner and is open 24/7. It’s a popular college hangout very late in the evening. If you really want a feel for the student community, sit close to the window and watch the mass number of students walking by or observe those eating. The food is VERY reasonably priced too.

Best Indian food in town?

Dean J–thanks for the offer; we are staying at the Best Western near the airport (actually in Ruckersville).

UVAorBust–I think you should wear the pink ones so you’ll be more easily identifiable!

I love food in Charlottesville! My personal recommendations would be Bodo’s for breakfast, Take It Away for lunch, and Basil for dinner. All three are on the corner.

Also, Duner’s is probably the best restaurant around (Dean J is correct, it’s in Ivy), but is a little bit of a drive from campus, maybe 10-15 minutes.

Himalayan Fusion is my fav for Indian, Nepalese, and Tibetan food. The owner is from Darjeeling.

A lot of people like Milan, on Route 29.

Oh man people have already posted a lot of the great restaurants. Let me reiterate some things about each that you wouldn’t know otherwise:

Bluegrass Grill - this is on the downtown mall. It is really packed (like, 40+ mins for a table) unless you go around 2pm.
Bodo’s Bagels - there are 3 locations. The closest to Pantops is the one at Barracks rd since you can take 250 all the way there and turn left immediately.
The Nook - this is an AMAZING diner on the downtown mall. Try their milkshakes.

Christian’s Pizza, Marco & Luca’s dumplings - both of these have locations on the Corner and the downtown mall. You can also order dumplings by the half order, for instance if you want 1.5 orders (a lot of guys just go for the double order though).

Shebeen - this is in a little shopping mall right before the downtown mall. It is a bit pricier than the other things you have on this list.
Thai 99 - BEST EVER. There are 2 of them, one up 29 and one right off of 64. I go there once a week. Lemongrass is good, too, but more upscale, pricey, and not worth the price difference. There are 2 other Thai chains in CVille but they are no where near as a good as Thai 99.
Guadalajara - There are 5 of these now, one in Pantops, one all the way up 29 near the airport, one in between the airport and UVA, one right next to the Thai 99 off of 64, and one a little bit past the downtown mall. Amazing cheap Mexican food.

FINE DINING: Zocalo Maya etc are definitely way more expensive ($25/person at least) than your other items. Peter Chang’s is making its name know. If you want good local cheaper Chinese food you could try the Hibachi Grill up 29, the Sakura near the airport (it is real Hibachi and they put on a show while they cook your food), or anything else found on campusdish .com The Szechuan restaurant will also deliver hibachi to UVA from that website.

White Spot - you must get the Gusburger, a burger topped with an egg. It is amazing. You could also get Grillswith which is donuts and ice cream.

Sticks is good, they have kabobs and wraps, it is in between the fraternity street Rugby Rd and the downtown mall (near the Bodos in that part of town). There is also a Pita Pit right next to the Rev Soup on the corner which has similar stuff (but the Pita Pit is a bit more mainstream). If you go to Rev Soup, if you quote the poet of the month you get 10% off. More on the corner are Mellow Mushroom, which is more unique pizza combinations (really good), Little John’s (my little piece of the North in CVille, they have great NY cheesecake), and Boylan Heights (American food, right near Rev Soup). I would also recommend College Inn. They have great pizza and Italian/American food (parm. subs are so good!). The Villa and The Cav Diner (fka Sam’s Kitchen) are 2 other diners in between Barracks and UVA. I won’t even talk about Brixx, they replaced the Boston Market and I’m still mad about that. You could also go to Wood Grill, which is up 29, if you want a nice southern buffet experience.

Spudnuts donuts is right after the downtown mall near that Guadalajara, they are fantastic. Anna’s Pizza is right neat the other Guadalajara and Thai 99 off of 64 and it is really great, we went there after a grading party one time.

The Boat House is fantastic, they have deal nights sometimes and great, not too pricey but more upscale food.

If you want to eat at a gas station (this CVille trend boggles my mind and astounds me that it has not caught on more places… It is weird but awesome), you can go to the Liberty Everyday right in Pantops. I tutor there once a week. They have a good buffalo chicken sandwich. There is also a Sheetz north of town.

I DO have to vote you go to the Sweet Frog frozen yogurt place on the downtown mall. You pick whatever flavors you want, and whatever toppings you want, and then pay per ounce. It is amazing!!!

Hope this gives you a nice list of places to eat over your next 4 years.

Oh also the best Indian is MILAN which is just past Barracks. They have this great lunch buffet…

One that hasn’t been mentioned is FRY SPRINGS STATION. Opened last fall and has very unique pizzas. Located at corner of JPA and Maury. Highly recommend.

Dean J and other locals, give it a try if you haven’t already…I think you will enjoy it!

We know the folks behind Frys Spring (well, it’s such a small town that we know the people behind half the restaurants!). Solid project, but parking is difficult, which is why I didn’t mention it.

BTW, an out of the way spot with great breakfast is a place called Beer Run are Carlton Road (the name matches the retail part of the store, but doesn’t match the food). Along the lines of Mas, you don’t just happen to walk by. It’s a destination. There’s a very good Thai place just called Pad Thai next to Beer Run. There’s also a Mexican bakery, Las Palmas around the back of the building. Aqui es Mexico isn’t far away. :)

How far is the Corner from Grounds/The Lawn exactly?

The Corner is adjacent. Right next to everything.

The Corner is down a little hill from the Rotunda. It’s probably a 1 minute walk from the Rotunda to the bank that’s at the “top” of the Corner.

The Downtown Mall is one mile down the same road. There is a free trolley that circles Grounds, goes down Main Street, then circles the Downtown Mall. In addition, everyone with a UVa ID rides the city buses for free.

Jbehlend, my husband came home with Anna’s pizza just this week! I can’t believe how fast the time has flown–it has been 30 years since we had that first date! You’ll have to check out all the old places the next time you are in C’ville–it’s kind of nice that some of them are still around:).

I really have to “third” the Spudnuts comments!! Freedman brought them to my Politics seminar during 4th year and they are truly among the best doughnuts.

I really like Mellow Mushroom (on the corner)- You get quite a bit of bang for your buck here. Also, keep in mind that they do (or did-it’s been awhile since I was in C’ville) trivia nights that can be a lot of fun and a way to relax with friends during the semester!

Having been exposed to fresh Jersey bagels most of my life, Bodo’s is nothing in comparison, but they offer a decent amount of variety and it’s not terrible in the least bit.

Hazel- I love how you mentioned the Sheetz up on 29. It’s so odd, but it was always a treat going home to PA to either stop there or the one near Staunton. I did the same thing with WaWa on my way back down from PA.

On my way to the campus right now! I ate at horse & hound last night and it was fantastic. I’ll type more after the day.

Hope I see some of you today!
