Retake a 780 for Math IIC?

I took the Math IIC SATII in January and got a 780. Originally, I was really excited about this because I really didn't study much at all, but now I'm having second thoughts. I know that 800 is 90th percentile, and I'm interested in top schools (including a few very selective ivies). Should I retake this and aim for 800 or should I keep 780 and move on? How much of a difference will it actually make?

Do not retake it. Just don't.

very little difference at all. it's just not worth it trying to get those extra 20 pts, no one's going to push you aside for another applicant just for that.

If you are aiming for the ivies, it would be better to take it again, but i don't know if you can do that. Do universities accept February scores?

Don't be a prestige whore. A 780 2C will not kill your chances at "a few very selective Ivies," and an 800 won't automatically put you in there either.

You have better things to do with your time.

I'm in a similar situation. I took the 2C in January and got 790...I'll probably be taking a few other SATIIs in May or June, and if I have an open slot, I'll probably give MathIIC another shot to secure that 800.

RETAKE anything less than 800. for all SATs. period!

I hope that theleet is being sarcastic, but I'm too tired to tell.

IMO: don't bother taking it again.

I got a 780 and am retaking.

retake!!! retake!!! if you got time! i only got 780 as well :( but i don't got time to retake, retake and get 800, good luck :)

dude i say u should retake
its worth a try b/c it is so common to get an 800 on that test
it will definately NOT kill ur chances if u said u got a 780 on IIC either
just prep a little better for the test this time
get Barron's SAT II Math IIC prep and u will make an 800 easy :)

Of course a 780 or 790 won't kill you, but 800 is significantly better, especially on the IIC.

The reasoning behind this: due to the curve, 800 is the score given for missing anywhere from 0 to 4-5 questions on the test. When the adcom sees an 800 MathIIC, he not only sees a perfect score but for all he knows, you aced the test. However, when the adcom sees 790, he know for a fact that you have missed at least 5 or 6 points. That's the difference between 800 and 790 on the IIC - potentially five or six points.

I'm not sure if that's how everyone views it, but that's how I do. At any rate, retaking a 780 or 790 shouldn't really be a priority for anyone, but it could be something to work on if you have some spare time...

Wow...all I can say is wow. Re-taking a 780 out of 800 SAT II...wow.

Not worth it in my opinion. Anything between a 770 and 800 is pretty much the same. Just answering a few more questions correctly will not boost your chances significantly.

Focus on more important things.

grumpybear727, your age is 17. Are you a junior now? Are you SERIOUSLY interested in a school where math is a favored subject, or are you mostly just trying to get into some prestigious school wherever, not necessarily with studying math in mind?

I second dickies's post.

The difference between a 780 and an 800 is about 2 questions. Neither score will get you in, and neither score will keep you out.

Instead... write a poem, go out to eat with your friends, do some math problems for fun, tutor someone who needs your help, study and bring up some borderline grades, talk to your parents, volunteer at the library, read a good book, buy your siblings ice cream, invest more time in one (or a few) of your clubs, gather flowers and hand them out to people who seem sad, etc.

You'll improve your chances of getting in and have a fun time while you're at it!

thanks for the advice guys! and yes, im a junior, and interested in a school that's really science-focused (but not necessarily math focused?) im sorta new to taking SAT IIs and i dont really know how to interpret them yet.

if i were in ur position, i would finish all other tests and maybe retake if i had time at the end. 780 is still a nice score, so i wouldn't stress over that. focus on other subjects for now

a 780 is an excellent, excellent score.
