Hi, im a civil engineering major and I was wondering if it would be a good idea to retake the classes that I messed up in to raise my gpa. I know that I can get As or Bs if I retake the classes that I got Cs and Ds in, because to be honest I was just lazy as **** during my freshman/sophomore year. However, I really got my **** together last semester and got a 3.7. Anyways, do any of you think that its a good idea to retake these classes? (The final grade for a class is the average of the two grades)
Thanks!

um…definitely if you have the time to. you want your gpa as strong as possible. Its good that you got on your stuff finally (something that I need to do). but year do that.

I’d recommend retaking the classes where you got Ds, only if you are 110% certain you will get at least a B or better and it will not affect your current classes. You are probably better off forgetting about those Cs and Ds and focusing on the new material. Keep in mind both grades may be listed on your transcripts.

First check the school. In our school you cannot retake the course unless you get a W (withdrawal) or a failure (F).

If you think you didn’t get any knowledge from the courses and your school allows you to retake them, by all means please do so, **IF AND ONLY IF these courses are cruical to your future MAJOR courses. ** If they are just liberal arts, please move on. If that’s just calculus 1 or 2, well move on too.

Raising GPA is good but getting perfect 4.0 is not even that big a deal these days.

Really? can you explain this a tad more. and what is the optimal gpa then?

Optimal GPA?
We have another thread about this.
You have GPA inflation. Your professors could be really easy on you and give you straight A. 4.0 Bam.
I have all the tough professors but I learned a lot than you, so potentially I am more knowledgeable than you do.

I am suggesting that fighting after 4.0 is cool, but don’t get upset when you don’t.

keyword: not that big a deal these days. A lot people get 4.0.

thanks for the replies guys. i think ima retake some of my classes that i know for sure i can get a good grade in. by the way, do you know if most graduate schools/employers look at your overall GPA, last 60 credits GPA, or your major GPA? or can you just put whichever is higher onto your resume?
