I'm wondering whether I should take either of my SAT IIs over again. I scored 780 on Math IIc and 770 in Biology.

The math score is what concerns me most, as it is only 84th percentile.

My first choice colleges are UCSD UCLA or UCB.

I'm pretty confident I could score better in Math if I invested just a few more hours of study, but I'm still afraid of doing worse. Should I retake?

Do not worry about your scores; they are fantastic. Also, dont get too wrapped up in the percentiles. Because SAT II test-takers in any given subject are typically among the most knowledgeable about that subject, the percentile rankings are really quite meaningless. To put your math percentile in perspective, you should be aware that a perfect 800 in the IIC is only in the 90th percentile. (If you were to take Chinese with Listening, an 800 would only land you in the 56th percentile.) In conclusion, BE PROUD! Your scores would be highly competitive at any institution of higher learning in the country.

I kinda disagree with Shadow. Percentages from SAT IIs should be more important just for the reason he/she said they didn't matter. These kids are typically among the most knowledgeable about that subject, but these are the same people you're going to be competing against for admission into selective colleges anyways. A 780 is amazing, but none-the-less, 15 percent of test takers and people who are likely to apply to similiar colleges, did as good or better than you.

But I would never take anything above a 750 over. So i guess my post made no sense...

For your first-choice colleges, especially if you're in-state, those SAT II score will definitely be fine. They'd be fine for virtually every college.

I don't see anything wrong with your SAT II scores, they are 750+ that's impressive enough.

I had friends that got in the low 700s on the SAT IIs and still got into all the colleges that you want to go to, and some even with mid 600s.

Dont worry so much. They are great, I would be happy with those scores. 780 is too close to 800, If I were you, I wouldnt risk taking it again, missing one more problem can drag you down another 10 points.

there is a 30-point margin of error on these tests, which is exactly why CB gives you a "score range," and yours probably includes 800. don't bother taking it again, 780 is fine.

Even if you retook both and got double 800's, UC schools will NOT care. UCSD, in fact, will only give you 3200 points for exams. So if you got, for example, 2200 on the SAT I, nothing over 1000 total on the two SAT II's will go into their formula. They won't sit and stare at each one of their 42,000 applications agonizing over whether a 780 will do or not. Neither will the other two schools on your list, although I don't know if they cap test scores or not but it doesn't matter. UCB and UCLA will be looking for some other reason to reject you ;-) -- so try to figure out what that might be and fix that if you can instead of worrying about 20 points on an SAT II. Good luck.
