I got into Revelle College recently and I just wanted to know more about it since SD is a possibility for me! I heard that the GE's are crazy!! But Revelle is pretty much the most respected, is that true? And how is it overall??

Congrats!

TBH, colleges are pretty arbitrary outside of GE’s and housing at UCSD. So there really isn’t a college that is more respected than others. There might be small judgments made by some students, but employers and everyone else won’t care what college you went to at all.

Overall, I hear that GE’s are hard, most people don’t like the dining hall, and it’s at one end of campus, so getting to some classes might take a while. On the plus, Revelle housing is next to a huge parking lot and it actually has a lot of genuinely nice people.

Great! Still a bit reluctant to go there though aha, but thanks anyway!

I have no regrets about being in Revelle. I’m a social sciences major and I can fully say that while it did kinda suck to have to take math/science all of that stuff etc, it definitely helped me and helped me become a more well-rounded person, which is why I chose Revelle in the first place. It’s also nice if you aren’t exactly sure what you want to major in, because you have more required classes, it helps give you more structure and it also allows you to explore your options without feeling like you’re wasting a class or something if you were in another college… (since you’d probably have to take it in Revelle anyways… at least it’d count toward something!)

just sorta depends on where you’re coming from and what you place in higher priority.

It is respected in that sense that everyone will salute you for being brave enough to attend SD as a Revelle student… lol jk
It is the first college so it is the most respected in that sense, but that stuff are kinda non-trivial.
The GE are pretty hard compared to the rest of the college, but it is doable. Just think about all the people that are in Revelle, both past and present. If they can graduate, so can you. Though if you are more of a science person/major, then it would be easier on you.

Ohhh I see, yeah I’m majoring in Human Bio at Sd so hopefully it is easier for me…This is fantastic!! All that I have seen so far is people bashing on Revelle, and after reading these comments; I think Sd is a possibility!! Thanks for the help!!

Ah I see. I think Revelle actually is the college that most pre-med/pre-health students go to (at least that’s the impression I get. Not sure if that means most Human Bio major tho). Revelle is science-themed in that almost all of your science courses would be taken at a building in Revelle. So if you are living in the housing in Revelle then it’d be a fairly close walk to the lectures and office hours of the professor. Also, the School of Med and most labs are in Revelle so it is a bit easier for you if you plan to get an internship or lab work there in terms of walking distance.

Oh I just checked the 4 year plan for revelle, sixth, and miur. I am not sure how accurate it is but human bio at revelle actually require the least amount of units to graduate. Revelle would require you to take 178 units while sixth and miur would require you to take 183 units. Haha that is certainly interesting. I guess the GE isn’t as crazy as I thought.

Actually, Revelle requires 184 units to graduate and Muir reqiures 180. Not sure about the other colleges.

Oh that’s right, I forgot about the unit requirements threshold for each college. Thanks for the correction.

So let me rephrase it: Being in Revelle would mean you’d have the take the least amount of GE in order to satisfy your major requirement in your college; this is mostly due to the overlap between major requirement and GE requirement. But in order to graduate, you’d still need to take 4 more units than most colleges to graduate. This means that you probably need to take some random elective, seminars, or have some AP credits.

In the end, it doesn’t really matter honestly. 4 units out of the 180 requirement is so negligible lol (just be glad you aren’t bioengi or something. 221 units lol)

LOLOL, I don’t know if I should be thrilled or scared about Revelle now aha, but thanks for all this info!! But I am glad that Revelle is the college where all the pre-meds are, at least that’s a positive
