Rice Interim Decision Official Post

highschooldoc.. u know what i think??
Ok, im really really happy for everyone who has gotten into rice. good job to u guys.. but i think ethnicity may have a lot to do with rice's decision. I believe that i am pretty qualified... at least i've gotten sat/act scores as good as many others who were accepted.. but i was deferred and i think it's because im asian. what does everyone else think?

That's ludicrous. Although Rice may have a fairly large amount of Asians, they won't defer/reject anyone because of race. Good SAT/ACT scores aren't everything. Probable causes for one's deferral or rejection can be based on many other reasons including recommendations, essays, extracurricular activities, luck, and even his or her geographical diversity, since many other competitive students could potentially apply from the same state. Well, I wish you all luck, and I know you'll do well wherever you eventually end up.

Simply put, you can have great quantitative stats, but get rejected. You must show passion for your EC's and learning, and if possible incorporate it into your essays. They want unique people. Sadly, an asian that excels in mathematics and science who has the common EC's does not seem appealing because there are so many (I don't mean to sound harsh).

I think I got it with my faults for several reasons. First, I absolutely SUCK at English. My ability to understand/interpret is good, but my writing is abysmal since I have never had a good English teacher so when my grade went for a 90+ average Fresh thru Junior to a 70 in Senior it looked bad. I turned it into a strength by increasing my average 7 points per six weeks and explained in my essay that I'm not perfect, but I strive to excel in all areas because it is worth the effort. That and I think my essay was interesting... had three languages in the opening sentence =). Also, for my box I drew a picture of my hand drawing a hand drawing a hand drawing a hand =D

After the 3rd, my pencil was tooo thick to continue.

Where did you find this criteria?

www.princetonreview.com

i think it also has to do with what school within rice you applied to. like it'd be much easier for you to get into a school that less people apply to. dunno, thats just my guess.

depends on size of school wishabee

i think im going to agree with azchica...i think race is a HUGE determinant on college admissions, especially in a place where the majority of the minority is asian. However, i don't think it's big enough of a determinant to decide whether to accept or reject..but i do think it's big enough of a determinant to defer or wait-list.

Possible stupid question warning -- if there was no merit aid info in the decision package, does that mean you are not being offered any merit aid?

I think so, but rumor has it that if your FAFSA hasn't been submitted yet, then you might have a chance. We don't know

so you shouldn't submit FAFSA at this point if you didnt receive the merit aid?

no, sorry, i meant, if you haven't submitted your FAFSA, then Rice hasn't looked into any financial aid yet, merit or need. I'm not sure about this, so please take it lightly. I have no confirmation on this matter.

Thanks for your input KiteBoard. We submitted FAFSA & Profile the same night, but only Profile is showing on the website. D will call Rice in the AM to find out for sure what's going on.

I think geographical diversity is more important than racial diversity. I personally think everything about my application was only average or slightly above average. I have very similar stats to highschoolDOC, but I think coming from Mississippi gave me a huge advantage.

Honestly, race is one of those things that can be argued over and over adn no one will be sure. I'm asian with mediocre stats and I made it into Rice. Plus, I'm from a heavily populated state/area (New York). So, I don't know what to say azchica.

I don't mean to keep the issue going, but guys

What college would ever admit that it has to be "racist" to a degree?

Schools definitely consider race when admitting folks, why not the opposite. I like that they at least try to create diversity. (though how diverse can it be when everyone has such similarly high stats? :)

I think that amazing people were rejected and deferred here. Just think how much you will have to give where you do end up going. You can be happy there too...

to bring up the merit aid thing again -- i never turned in a FAFSA but i got a letter within my acceptance packet telling me that i was getting merit aid -- it told me which scholarship and how much also -- so i dont think that the FAFSA has anything to do with merit based aid, at least it didnt matter for me -- i hope this helps

The official word from Rice is if you didn't receive merit awards in the acceptance package, it means you didn't qualify for any. D loves the school, but this may change the order of her list.

How many people are in each school at Rice? How would you compare the sciences with Stanford & Duke? Which school is the best if you want to go to medical school (of the universitites)? Thanks for your opinions.
