Richmond Scholars Class of 2021

Hey guys, do you happen to know what the enrollment confirmation form looks like? Is it the form on page 9 of the Admit Packet? I saw that they need to have it emailed to them yet I still have no idea whether it was attached in the admission notification letter. Thanks!

Does anyone know whether all of the invitations for Richmond Scholars have already been sent? Thanks.

@JackUK they have not. Semi finalist notifications are made in batches through the end of January.

@JackUK I was just notified today so I’m pretty sure it’s not over yet.

This U of R admissions blog post I copied below may help answer some questions raised in this thread. I found it very helpful! My D was just chosen as a semifinalist around Dec. 20th. She submitted her supplemental info over the holidays.

Richmond Scholars: Next Steps
By Tom Nicholas

December 12, 2014

For all students who applied by December 1, consideration for our full-tuition Richmond Scholars program is automatic. This year, we received about 5,500 applications by the deadline. We get a lot of questions about the Richmond Scholars process, so I’m going to try to answer the most common ones here. If you have further questions, feel free to post a comment here or give our office a call.

How can I tell if my application is complete?

Relax, don’t freak out, and read this blog post.

How can I make sure my application is being considered for Richmond Scholars?

When you log in to MyApp (see above link), you’ll see a list of the documents we have received. If there is an item that reads “Richmond Scholars Applicant” with a date after it, your application is tagged to be considered for Richmond Scholars. The date itself doesn’t matter (whether before or after December 1) – if that item is in the list, you’re good to go.

MyApp says I’m missing part of my application. Help! Can I still be considered?

As long as your Common Application was submitted by the deadline, you can be considered for the Richmond Scholars program, but you need to send the missing piece(s) of your application as expediently as possible. If you’ve already sent something and it’s not showing up in MyApp 10-12 business days later, contact us to see what the hangup might be. Keep in mind that we will be closed from December 24 to January 1.

What happens next in the selection process?

The admission and faculty committees will spend December and January selecting students to move on to the semi-finalist round. Semi-finalists are notified via e-mail and have the opportunity to select up to two designations and submit additional materials in order to compete for those designations.

How many students are selected as semi-finalists?

Around 400.

My friend received a semi-finalist notification. Does that mean I wasn’t selected?

No. We send out semi-finalist notifications in batches throughout December and January, beginning today (December 12), so your file may not have been reviewed yet. It takes us a while to review 5,500 applications.

But my friend’s semi-finalist notification gave her a deadline of December 22 to submit new materials.

Each notification batch has its own deadline, giving students in that group 1-2 weeks to submit materials for the semi-finalist round of consideration. Our faculty committees have a huge task in reviewing hundreds of semi-finalists (in addition to teaching classes!), and they begin that task in early January. So the earlier you are selected, the earlier we ask you to submit your semi-finalist materials.

Is there any order to how applications are read? I submitted mine in September and haven’t heard anything, so does that mean I wasn’t selected?

There is really no explicable rhyme or reason to the order in which applications are reviewed. Because of all the various stages they go through in becoming complete and being reviewed, any initial order like date of submission or alphabetical organization quickly disappears.

I was selected as a semi-finalist. Does that mean I’m admitted to Richmond?

Not officially. Admission to Richmond is not final until you receive official notification from the Office of Admission (and we’ll be looking carefully at your mid-year senior grades!) However, being selected as a Richmond Scholars semi-finalist means you’ve been identified as a top student in our pool, so you can probably expect good news.

If I’m not selected as a semi-finalist, when will I be notified?

We only notify students who advance to the semi-finalist round. All semi-finalist notifications will be sent by the end of January. Students who do not advance simply continue in the review process for first-year admission, with a notification date of April 1 (for Regular Decision) or February 15 (for Early Decision II). :-/

Did any previously notified semi-finalists get a second notification email? I’m assuming they sent it again because I submitted it last-second (literally at like midnight of the due date) and they hadn’t processed it yet, but I wonder if they just didn’t receive my submission.

@PeregrineFlute I got a second notification as well. Not sure why, but I also submitted my supplementary materials a bit late.

@PeregrineFlute - There must have been an error for several students because my D also was notified a second time. When she contacted the office they indicated it was an error.

@PeregrineFlute same with my kid. My D refused to call and check. . . (sigh) I’m so glad this is almost over!

@luckymama64 Haha don’t worry; I was also reluctant to check. I did get the automated email saying, “we will be with you shortly,” so I wasn’t too worried. I just thought I’d post in case anyone else had a similar concern. Now it’s just a wait for decisions!

@luckymama64 - I know what you mean about wanting it to be over!
Does anyone know when they announce decisions about the next round?

@elena13 finalists are notified in February (some are notified earlier than others). Semi-finalists who do not advance are also notified of their status in the same timeframe.

@elena13 If you mean ED2, the website approximates February 15

I was referring to hearing about being a finalist for Richmond Scholars, but thanks for your responses @guineagirl96 and @MON824 .

What happens if a kid makes it to the next round? Do they get a fly-in?

@luckymama64 Artist scholar finalists are brought on campus for live interview and audition/portfolio review (a 3-day event in February; finalists are hosted by current Artist Scholars). All other finalists are interviewed by phone/skype. For Oldham, Boatwright, and Science Scholars, only the award winners are brought on campus for a visit (3-day event in April).

If you become a finalist you will have a skype interview. My daughter had a skype interview with 5 people. Once she was chosen as a Boatwright scholar the school contacts you so that you can attend the scholars weekend. UR pays for this.

I was just on the UR website and saw the message that all Richmond Scholar Semi Finalists were notified on or before Jan 12.

Yes I also saw that post about all Semifinalists having been notified. My D and I toured U of R yesterday and the admissions staff we met stated that finalist notifications should be sent mid-February. Good luck to all of the students! The more we learn about U of R, the more we love!

That’s really disappointing to hear that all semi finalists have been notified  I really put my all into my application and my GPA + ACT score were definitely high enough to qualify me.
