Richmond Scholars Finalist Day

<p>Does anyone know when the Finalists for Richmond Scholars are interviewed? I know its in mid-March, but does anyone know the exact days/week?</p>

<p>i’ve been trying to figure out too!</p>

<p>I asked the Admissions office about 2 weeks ago and at that time they said it will be March 16-18. Hope this helps! Good luck!</p>

<p>If the interviews are mid-march, then when do we find out if we are finalists?</p>

<p>I was told all semi-finalists will be contacted sometime in late February.</p>

<p>SEMI-finalists were contacted by late January. Now we’re talking about Finalists.</p>

<p>@biobabe: Only finalists attend in March, then I think they notify within 1-2 weeks who gets what scholarships.</p>

<p>My D was a finalist last year. She found out late February that she was a finalist. UR uses a travel company to make flight arrangements so that was not a problem.</p>

<p>@ Cermi: I know that we’re talking about finalists. Anyone who was named a semi-finalist will hear from UR in February, even those who aren’t continuing in the scholarship process.</p>

<p>Ok, so that means I’ll receive a letter even though I am not selected? Cool!</p>

<p>Has anybody heard whether or not they are either a Presidential recipient or a scholars finalist? If so, can you give us your stats?</p>

<p>I’m a finalist, so by default a Presidential recipient  What kind of stats are you interested in hearing?</p>

<p>which category are you a finalist for?</p>

<p>Just for Boatwright, but I also plan on interviewing for the Oliver Hill scholarship.</p>

<p>congratulations, that’s awesome! i hope the interview goes well and everything. what’s the oliver hill?</p>

<p>i applied for boatwright too but haven’t heard anything, so i’m guessing i didn’t get it. meh. oh well. :(</p>

<p>Oh, you never know! One of my best friends has similar stats to mine but she’s our valedictorian, and she hasn’t heard back yet - we don’t doubt she’ll be a finalist, so I wouldn’t let your hopes fall quite year.<br>
Thanks  The Oliver Hill Scholarship is another full-ride program, and it’s meant for African American students but anybody can apply while they’re interviewing for their other programs. I’m Latina so I may have a better shot at that one, but the chances are pretty good for everyone; at least, that’s the impression I got from the descriptions of it I’ve found. But I hope to see you at Richmond Scholars Days!</p>

<p>aww, thanks, that’s really nice of you. hope so too!</p>

<p>ooo, interesting, i hadn’t heard of that.</p>

<p>I’ll do some stats since they were asked for. I hope this is what you wanted.</p>

<p>Stats:
SAT I (by section): 740 CR, 680 M, 800 W
SAT IIs: 750 Lit, 700 US History, 590 Spanish w/ Listening
GPA, Unweighted and Weighted: 3.7 UW, 3.98 W
Rank: 32/400-some
ACT: n/a
APs (including this year’s): 11
IBs (including this year’s: n/a
Senior Yr Courseload: AP US Govt, AP English 12, AP Stats, APES, AP Spanish, AP Studio Art, Intl Relations/H Foreign Policy
Number of Apps from Your School: me and one other as far as I know.
Other stats (Awards, etc.): Natl Merit Commended, Natl Hispanic Scholar, Honor Roll, various district art awards, Honor Roll, Magnet student (my school is a magnet school for the arts), but all in all nothing incredibly awesome.</p>

<p>Subjective:
ECs listed on app: MUN, National Art Honor Society (founded), Project Uganda (helped to found), National Honor Society, Art Club, Magnet Council, and a lot of other tiny things that I had listed on my resume in the additional information section.
Job/Work Experience: Busch Gardens Europe theme park, as a games hostess.
Essays (subject and responses): Common App free response about the way my lifelong pursuit of a most purgative art form has altered my newfound passion for international politics. Supplement essay was a little lame. It was a story about a recorder choir concert when I was in elementary school and how I got over my shyness. It was written mostly to be comical and I guess they found some merit in it, but I wasn’t too fond of it.<br>
Teacher Recs: An alumni rec from my US History teacher. Pretty enthusiastic.
Counselor Rec: SO enthusiastic.
Interview (feel, interviewer and general location): n/a
Hook (TASP, RSI, Research, etc.): First-generation student, I guess, is the only hook I can think of.</p>

<p>Location/Person:
State or Country: Virginia (Tidewater area, non-NoVA)
School Type, Average Stats of School (if available): public, magnet, 75% of seniors attend any sort of post-sec education, and about 20% of students drop out.
Ethnicity: Latina
Gender: Female
Income Bracket: 80-90K
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): First-generation, and that’s pretty much it.
Strengths: My first essay was great. Recommendation letters, and my ECs are pretty varied. Test scores are good.
Weaknesses: GPA to an extent.
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: I have pretty good standardized test scores and a strong academic record. My classes are the most challenging you can take at my school and I think they got a feel of that, and I gave them a good impression of my leadership skills. I think I’m just a different candidate than they usually get, which may be why they’re considering me over people with perfect test scores and 4.0 GPAs.
Where else are you applying: University of Chicago (accepted early action), William and Mary, Georgetown (deferred early action), Kenyon, Bard, St. John’s University (accepted with full ride).
Weaknesses: My other essay. I’m sure are other things but that was just embarrassing.</p>

<p>When is the finalist notification being emailed?</p>

<p>Most have already been emailed.</p>
