At the University of Florida, how do they choose who will end up in the same room as you? Is there a personality test of some sort or is it just random?
Hi! It’s totally random unless you chose a person through Facebook, or room sync (which you’ll get access to after you accept your housing contract.).
Yes, you will be able to access Room-sync after you do your housing contract.
Also, you can throw out info on the family or admitted students FB pages.
In our experience, if you really want a specific roommate only put down that one roommate when asked for a name. You are permitted to create a roommate group of 8, but they are forced to separate you all into whatever pairs they choose and not usually on the same floor or hall, so I never saw the point. My daughter found a roommate on the UF 2020 Facebook page by asking around and asking each other lifestyle questions. Then later, she was sent a link from UF for a site called RoomSync which was another way of linking with a potential roommate. Don’t be afraid to ask questions to screen him/her. Are you a morning person? Are you a partier? And if you have a great priority date don’t reveal it. My daughter’s roommate was not honest about answering her questions and was aware of her very good priority date.
The random process is truly completely random. I also applied to USF and began a housing app there, and it did ask things such as ‘do you smoke’ ‘are you messy’ ‘do you stay up late’ - UF did not ask any of those things. If you choose random, it will be random. So if you aren’t okay with that, do what the other posters said. Reach out on FB/social media.
HOWEVER, the random process shouldn’t be intimidating. Most people get along fine with their random roommates. I am getting along GREAT with mine. We are very similar, she is super sweet, polite, and accommodating, and pretty much the ideal roommate. I do have friends going here but I chose random over rooming with friends because I’ve heard that sometimes being in such close quarters with a friend is less than ideal. Sometimes it’s nice to just quietly share your space with an acquaintance and keep your life mostly to yourself, instead of letting a friend get a look at your most intimate routines, habits, etc… Hopefully that makes sense. A stranger is much less likely to be nosy than a friend.
