I am a college sophomore looking to transfer for the fall. I graduated High School with a 3.97 and 98 average. I got a 1790 on my SATs. I have been attending Binghamton University. Leaving Binghamton is practically suicide as far as it being a fantastic school; it's incredibly selective. I know it's stupid to leave it, but I just don't like the distance from home (I live in Fairfield County in CT).

Basically, I'm trying to find a reputable school closer to home (within two hours). My average GPA at Binghamton was a 3.05 (it's a tough school, don't judge).

I'm looking at UCONN, Rutgers, SUNY New Paltz and possibly others including Ramapo. I am an Environmental Studies/Conservation Biology major.

If anyone knows about these schools or has other suggestions that would be great! Price is a big deal with my family, so if you know great public schools that would help as well.

If money is an issue for your family then I suggest that you stay in binghamton or transfer back to Uconn where you will pay in-state tuition. Rutgers, New Paltz, Ramapo cost just as much if not more than binghamton.
If you don’t mind going to school with mormon and possibly turning into one then I suggest Brigham Young in Provo.

Have you considered Stony Brook - it’s just a ferry ride away, has a great science dept and since it’s also part of SUNY your credits should transfer.

My son transferred to New Paltz as a junior from a very selective private school. He loves it there. He has a good friend who is an environmental studies major and seems very happy. I think you will find it much more down to earth than Bing. If I can ask him any questions for you let me know.

I’m not trying to be insulting KSmith but if you got in Binghamton with a 1790 its not that selective. Your GPA is outstanding as is your class rank but… Why does LilyMoon suggest that Binghamton is not down to earth?

I didn’t say Binghamton wasn’t down to earth, I just think New Paltz is more so. Binghamton does attract a more competitive type population in my opinion…a good number of students from my son’s High School went there as well as other people we know. Judging by the type of student who I have seen attend, they are very bright but also competitive and driven. Maybe those that would have liked to go to Ivy league or top 50 private schools but preferred a lower cost option. New Paltz tends to be more laid back and quirky/artsy. I just think the two schools attract very different populations. My son could have gone to Bing but he felt New Paltz was a better fit for him. Just my opinion based on my observation. If you have a differing opinion please feel free to post.

Why is everyone trying to bring me down on the SAT scores? SATs AREN’T EVERYTHING. Schools barely look at them anymore. Binghamton only accepts 30% of its applicants. It’s been called a public ivy. High school gpa average is a 3.7, it’s pretty selective.

New Paltz does seem more down to earth from what I’ve read. At least as an envi major, we’re hippie type people. It’s not that I greatly disliked Binghamton, I’m just not sure it’s for me. Everyone pushed me to go because of its reputability. And I enjoyed it, but there’s some other things going on in my life. I want something more quirky and real – which is why I am looking at New Paltz now. And LilyMoon, it’d be great to get some questions answered! I’m visiting the 18th at New Paltz.
