How safe is the area around UC Riverside? One of my friends claim that she did not feel secure walking around there and dropped out.

When I went there (during the day) it seemed safe to me. I’m coming from a very small weathy town which is pretty safe (people feel safe enough to leave their houses unlocked when they’re out). If I heard right, they have two police forces: UC Riverside’s personal Police and the city of Riverside’s. As long as your follow your common sense(walk in groups… ect.), this one ucr student tells me, you should be fine.

I felt safe while I was there. Both UCPD and RCPD past by patrolling. Now if you go 3 miles down University Ave it seems like East LA. But the immediate area of UCR isn’t bad

yep its not really bad. I thought it would be like ghetto right around the campus but it wasnt that bad.

The suroundings look actually quite new. I visited UCI, Cal Poly, and USC; UCR looked just as nice (if not better than some of) them.

The UCPD and RCPD always patrol the area. If you use common sense (walk in groups at night, take advantage of the campus escort service, etc.), you’ll be fine. The immediate area around UCR isn’t bad. If you keep driving down University Avenue and past downtown, maybe. But I’ve been to the downtown area a few times (during the day and night with friends) and it’s fine.

thanks for the answers

honestly the UCPD don’t do much. I’ve heard so many stories about people calling them and they either don’t show up or they show up hours later. if something happens don’t call UCPD call the RCPD. They also have an escort service, you can call them and have someone escort you to your dorm or car or another class at night if you don’t feel comfortable, but again, not that great of service, had so many people waiting for a long time for someone to show up to escort them. which is weird cause i always see them all hanging out in the library looking bored. the campus is dimly lit at night so be careful. I’ve had many night classes for 2 years now and i’ve had no trouble, but always be safe.
