Hi! I'm a rising eigth grader and I plan on applying to Choate and Exeter, as well as some local schools, this fall. Obviously, for those schools, some SSAT prep might be a good idea. I plan on preparing a lot this summer, but I was just wondering how SAT prep (which I did a lot of this year for the CDB scholarship) is known to transfer to the SSAT. Any wisdom is appreciated, as well as perhaps some recommendations for an SSAT prep book :)

I studied with the preparing and applying SSAT book, and some words with princeton review SAT cards.

I did not apply to Exeter but I’m sure you’ll love Choate! I did!

Hey there! I’m new to CC, but not new to the process of the SSAT. Like Mex, I’d recommend the official SSAT study guide. I used a book called “Verbal Advantage” for the words, and I did a lot better than I expected (in all sections, actually). I didn’t do any extra practice for the math or the reading comprehension, but you might want to consider practicing a lot of comprehension (the hardest section, in my opinion).

Best of luck to you! I’m attending Andover next year, and have a friend starting Exeter, as well.

One obvious problem w using only SAT prep materials for the SSAT, is that the SAT does not have a test section on word analogies.

The new Kaplan SSAT book is great, and the practice tests are really helpful. Also the Preparing And Applying for the SSATS is really good!! And the Princeton review book is amazing as well. Also there should be plenty of free word lists online that you can use for vocab prep. Hope that helped!

thanks for the help you guys! I recently got the Kaplan SSAT book, and I’m really liking it. I already memorized all the words on their word list, but I’ll probably consult some other lists as well. I haven’t taken a practice test yet, but sometime soon…

I think I used a worldly-wise SSAT word list on the Internet…can’t remember though maybe that was something else?

Princeton Review is probably the best review book. The math test on the SSAT is really easy but the verbal is the hardest part on the whole test (so I’ve heard) the Princeton review really helps with the verbal, and vocab
