SAT August 26, 2017 Discussion

1420

790 on Math
630 on English

Ay my scores aren’t out yet… I called the people and said I should check back at night or tomorrow morning :confused:

Check back at night or tomorrow morning? Are you kidding me? What kind of game are they playing here? So sorry @sejoonjp for having to go through this drawn out process.

The CollegeBoard released 8 tests are pretty accurate as both kids achieved about the same scores as they got on them when timed (high 1500’s).

1560 with an 800 math! (Yeah, I fell asleep…)

You’re not alone @Sejoonjp. My S’s has not been released either. I was expecting it though. His June result was also delayed (supposedly because of a reported irregularity somewhere at the test center). After a couple of weeks of anxious 'phone calls, the result was released without explanation: an almost identical scenario to one with my D two years ago (different test center). So actually, even though the August test was taken at yet another test center, I was wearily resigned to him being left in the dark once more…

Son got 750 in r/w (5 wrong) and 800 in math. 1550! very pleased as he was not planning on retaking. does anyone know how it translates in the old SAT model?

Isn’t it interesting that so many kids do better on the math than the reading? I wonder if they see that trend nationally and what that says about the test in general.

I think reading is given more weight and/or has a steeper curve. For example, my daughter got the same PSAT score as some of her peers but she made national merit as her selection index (which weights reading more) was much higher. Verbal scores were really strong.

Yeah. it seems like a lot of people are acing math this time around. Easy section even though -1 is still 800?

@kesari my impression is that the writing part is easier and scores drop by one point for each one wrong almost every time (one wrong 39 two wrong 38 etc) but that kids get a little more leeway on the reading part. S19 got seven wrong on reading and still got a 35 subscore.

@snowfairy137 I think the math section seemed easy to the advanced math kids out there but maybe wasn’t necessarily easier compared to previous SATs. S19 took a couple of CB practice tests where one wrong was still an 800.

mine missed two math questions and it dropped to 760

@center That’s brutal.
So -1 = 800 and -2 = 760?
Wow.

Edit: Wait that makes no sense, because people have been reporting 790 math scores. Are you looking at the right score? 38 in math doesn’t mean you got 2 wrong.

Hm. That is pretty weird. I wonder what the subscore is for a 790 in math? I didn’t think you could get a 790, just an 800 or 780. I thought maybe the subscores broke down like this-

0 wrong (40)
1 wrong (40)
2 wrong (38) which doubled and add a zero means 760.

where they skipped a 39 in the subscores. Maybe it depended on which question the student got wrong? And some kids with 2 wrong got a 39.5 subscore (790)? I don’t think CB has ever distinguished scores by which problem kids got incorrect though.

@homerdog There are some on the last two pages.

@holychild my DS got 620 end of 9th grade this past June-too low to report, even though it was right after AP Bio, but exhaustion and lack of preparation in areas not covered by AP exam showed. Studied for about a month on weekends this past summer and took it again, got 720-not awesome, but decent, as our rule is anything over 700 is reportable. This is his first SAT2, he’ll take 2 more next summer, at the end of 10th grade, as he’ll be done with AP Chem, AP Phys 2 and Precalc. he’ll report whichever top 2 scores out of all. So, maybe you want to spend another month studying and retake it, but don’t wait too long, since this stuff fades and then you have to put more into review.

@snowfairy137 yes brutal

@homerdog
I think you are right. He missed two in writing and got 38, but missed 5 in reading and got 37.

My son, a junior, got a 1520. 800/Math and 720/Reading/English. He worked with a Reading/English tutor for ten sessions. She said that he should not hang his hat on this score. Most likely will take again in Dec. Too busy with his varsity sport in the fall.

@3boys4m3 where is thinking of applying? What score do you think he needs to get?
