SAT for TAMU, UT Austin, GA Tech

Hi everyone,
I want to study computer engineering at a US school. I’m from Slovenia, Europe, but I have an American citizenship, I was born in Virginia.
Anyway, I want to know what scores I should get on my June 6th SAT on the math section, atleast, to even have a hope of getting into UT Austin, GA Tech or TAMU and which do you think is hardest to get into for computer engineering.

My scores from Jan 24th are:
Math: 660
Reading: 550
Writing: 580
My GPA is 4.1/5.0, I’m top 25% of my class, but probably no university cares, since they don’t know my school…

I know something about GA tech, they have a nice common app data sheet, but I don’t know about UT Austin or TAMU, I’ve searched, believe me. Their data sheets have the data of ALL students, but seeing how easy is to get into one school there, but something like Cockrell, which is what I’m looking at, is a totally different. And I know very little about TAMU, I’ve heard VERY mixed oppinions here about the SAT scores required to be accepted.

Anyway, I have another month to prepare, what SAT scores should I aim for for all 3 schools, and which school do I have the most chances with?
I will try to put my reading and writing over 600, and I’ll try to get around 690 on my math. But honestly, so many universities only state CR+Math on their data sheet, does any engineering school actually care about writing?? Just to know, I don’t wanna spend too much time preparing for it, if it’s obsolete!
Any other advices?
Thanks for taking the time to read or answer this, means allot

Anyone?

Look through this years threads on GT and UT, look at all the top stat rejects.

Most of the spots at AM and UT are filled with Texas residents and these acceptances are based on class rank for the most part. SAT scores at these school are not as relevant a measure of selectivity as they are at other schools that do not have an auto-admit policy. IMO your scores are too low.Getting into UT from OOS is very competitive and your choice of major is very popular. Same thing goes for A&M. Georgia Tech is also a real long shot from the little I know.

Research other schools and find some that fit your stats better, but first you need to know your budget.

Alfonsia:
Will do, thanks!

txstella: I know about 75% of the class being mostly top 10% Texans…
I know my scores suck for any of these schools, I’m going again on june 6th to put writing and reading over 600 and probably math around 700, I did a practice test today and got a 690 on one scale and 700 on the other scale in math. My combined score will probably be around 1900 or so.

Thanks to both for answering.

How about Texas Tech?

i would think you would be a good candidate for TX Tech. Check out their admissions website. Also, UT Dallas is an up and coming school that focuses on STEM fields.

The problem is not your qualifications so much as the demand for spots in the engineering schools at both UT and A&M.

Thanks for the reply!
But what do you mean by UT Dallas as being “up and coming”? It seems they are a completely functional school as far as I’ve read and there are some “chance me” pages on this site with people asking about UTD…

In any case, there are allot of great schools in Texas that I’m looking at and I’ll apply to all of them on the first day (August 1.) to even so slightly boost my scores with my June 6th sat scores. It definitely can’t hurt, right?

I need to clarify…UT Dallas (from what I remember) started out as a graduate level school. Then undergrad courses were added. But in recent years lots of on campus housing has been built and more retail is going in. So the campus culture has really improved. In fact the school is really pushing to become a Tier One Institution.

Ah, ok, I understand now. Well, I’ll definetely apply there too then. It seems it’s more in reach than UTA or GATech. But like I said, All I can do now is to get the best SAT score I can and then I’ll see where it takes me.
Thanks for all your answers!

I got my June 6th SAT scores back and, shockingly, my math score hasn’t changed, I got a 660 again, but I understand that sometimes we don’t get what we want, so I am now looking more toward Texas Tech and UNC Chapel hill. I did, however, raise my reading and writing scores! I got a 1900 alltogether, with 660 math, 640 writing and 600 reading.
I will still apply to UT Austin, Texas A&M and Georgia Tech, it doesn’t hurt, but I know my chances are preety much zero.
Is there any other good computer engineering school in the south that fits my scores?

It not in the South but U of Illinois at Urbana Champaign is amazing for tech majors. You will need a 700 in math at least for that school. Some other schools you can consider in the South could be UFlorida, UGeorgia, UNC (You need at least a 2100 on SAT or 30+ on ACTs) I would try taking the ACTs. I have a 1980 on SAT but a 31 on ACTs, so ACT were better for me in that manner

I can’t retake the SAT, the next one is in October, so I’d miss all of the early admission/action deadlines… Only the ACT is in september, which is doable, but how long does it actually take to get your ACT scores back?

TAMU is by far the easiest school to get into listed, and your SAT scores should be above a 650CR 650math to get in there

Do you have any ideas about Texas Tech, and UNC Chapel hill? I’m gonna apply to both of those as well!
