SAT II Chem??

I'm 12 weeks into my schools Hon Chem class and doing remarkably well. My school also offers an AP Chem class, which I have no intention of taking. (Science is not my strong point.) If I'm heading for a high/perfect score on the SAT II Chem test come June, would an honors level Chemistry class be enough, or would taking the AP Chem class be necessary?

Basically, how in depth is the material on the test?

Honors-level is usually never enough.

Topic and Percentage from CB

I. Structure of Matter 25
Including atomic theory and structure, periodic relationships; chemical bonding and molecular structure; nuclear reactions

II. States of Matter 15
Including kinetic molecular theory of gases, gas laws, liquids, solids, and phase changes; solutions, concentration units, solubility, conductivity, and colligative properties

III. Reaction Types 14
Including acids and bases, oxidationreduction, and precipitation

IV. Stoichiometry 12
Including the mole concept, Avogadro’s number, empirical and molecular ormulas, percentage composition, stoichiometric calculations, and limiting reagents

V. Equilibrium and Reaction Rates 7
Including gas equilibria, ionic equilibria, Le Chatelier’s principle, equilibrium expressions; factors affecting rates of reaction

VI. Thermodynamics 6
Including energy changes in chemical reactions and physical processes, Hess’s
Law, and randomness

VII. Descriptive Chemistry 13
Including physical and chemical properties of elements and their more familiar compounds, chemical reactivity and products of chemical reactions, simple examples from organic chemistry and environmental chemistry

VIII. Laboratory 8
Including equipment, measurement, procedures, observations, safety, calculations, and interpretation of results

You probably won't cover enough (or at all) in reaction types, bonding, equilibrium and reaction rates, thermodynamics, and descriptive chemistry.

i was in honors chem last year and a few kids from my class took the SAT II and didnt do so well. id suggest taking AP or not taking the SATII...its tough

Kid in my honors class got a 560-680.

maybe if you got a book to supplement it

Last year, my teacher for AP Chem was a senile old man on the verge of retirement. So he really didn't teach us much. I suggest using the Barron's review book. I studied with that and got a 750.

Which is not a good score for an SAT II.

i took honors chem last year....of course i studied before i took the chem SATs, but i got 760................
never run out of time before u get to last three quesitons!!!

-haha and i got 500,520,540 on the practice tests before the real thing

Thanks a bunch for the info. The decision to not even think about ever taking the test is now quite easy to make.

I would disagree. An honors chem course is more than enough for the SAT II if you do indeed have high average.

ollege conseling at my school recommends that people who finish regular chemistry to take the SAT II.

no honestly my chem class didn't cover a lot of that stuff...

At my school, you can't take an AP science (except AP physics B) until senior year, so you pretty much have to rely on honors classes for those tests. Of course, it depends on the course and the teacher, but generally, I think that an honors course, combined with 1 or 2 review books, will be enough.

Take some practice tests and see how you do

Ahh! The joys of conflicting information. Right now, we are working mainly on transcribing and balancing equations-- and, truth be told, I don't have 1/2 a clue what some topics mentioned even are... how succesful is self-studying some aspects of Chem for the SAT II?

What's a good review book to use (I took Chemistry 3 years ago, so I've forgotten quite a bit)...I bought a Kaplan one for $20, what do
ya 'all think? Any better books available? Thanks

Same here, SparkShooter, we're focusing on balancing equations too! What books are good? I bought Barrons SAT II Chem.

What dont you understand about balancing equations? I can help you with that....Someone answer my Q!!!

they should give you a periodic table for that test. then id ace it. i mean we're allowed a table for our tests in school so why not for that?

bump!!!!!!
