Hey guys!

I'm an international student and I don't know much about college applications so sorry if my question is pretty obvious.

I currently have a 1970 on the SAT (superscore) and a 750 on the spanish subject test. I'm planning to take the SAT us history and math I.

I was just wondering what you would advise me to focus on: improving my SAT score to a 2200+ or making sure to have pretty good scores on the subject tests.

Of course you're gonna say "do both", but I'm just asking that to choose which test I'll be taking in June.

Thanks in advance.

If you are taking classes on those subjects, it is good to take the test with fresh memory. Otherwise, subject test is not as essential as SAT or ACT.

actually I’m taking classes on math but not us history - it would be self study.

but if you say subject tests are not as essential as the SAT itself, I think I’m gonna try to improve this score…

thank you so much!

I actually recommend classes for subject tests while studying for the SAT by yourself.

Although the SAT is more important, you won’t get much from classes. The test itself is hugely dependent on how much you practice rather than how much you know. Classes in subject tests are useful as they can show you tricks and tips to do better.

The guy above misunderstand the conversation.
We are talking about classes at school, not test prep.

SAT > SAT Subject tests. If you can only sign up for the June exam, take the SAT first. Then in October, take the Subject tests since you’ll have more time to learn the material, especially if you’re doing self-study. If you get your June scores back and they aren’t what you expected, then you can take them again in October in lieu of Subjects.

Let me clarify my point again. SAT score is more important than SAT2 score, however, SAT is offered more times throughout the year than SAT2. In additional, if you are taking any classes at school right now and you want to take the subject test, June is the best time for that. If you are self-studying for the subject test, then you may want to get a good SAT1 score first.

thank you so much billcho. yeah, actually that is my point: I’m not taking any us history or math classes now, so I think I’m gonna focus on the SAT once it’s just a matter of practicing and pacing myself. then in october I take the subject test, so I’ll have much more time to study the whole thing.

Thank you SO MUCH, guys!

Yes, the SAT1 score is a more determining factor than SAT2 unless the school requests it specifically.

Most universities don’t require the SAT Subject Tests. They’d, however, make your application more strong. I’d suggest you to work on your SAT Reasoning Test because at the end of the day that’s what counts more.
