Really? I do remember them saying a few years ago that they don’t weigh the writing section much but I thought they had since changed their policy there.

If they still don’t, I’m kind of ****ed haha. I guess the 800 will look good considering that I’m applying as a journalism major.

I still think 20% is ridiculously low. First, you are applying ED. There is a thread from ED 2009 showing a bunch of student decisions. At least 4-5 had sub 3.5 GPA and lower SAT (2000-2100 range) and got in CAS ED with FA as well.

Your GPA is just at CAS level, right at the average honestly. CAS is like 3.6, and you’re sitting there.

Your SAT is actually above CAS level.

You have an upward trend. Obvious interest. Applying ED. Really, what more?

Definitely a match school. Your GPA is a bit low but the upward trend makes up for that. Your SATs are well above average for the school too. Have you took any subject tests? I believe they either require or highly recommend these. Taking them and doing well helps nonetheless.

The Common Data Set for 2009-10 indicates that the average High School GPA for degree-seeking, first-time (freshman) students who submitted a GPA is 3.58 for NYU as a whole, which coincidentally, is OP’s exact GPA. So, looks about average to me!!

I think your GPA could hurt but if your schedule is considered very/most rigorous then it should make up some. I’d say right now you have a 60/40 shot, really nail those essays and the recs could help how they view you academically. Good that you’re the EIC of your paper. You could also think about other great journalism programs like Syracuse; a fellow sportswriter of mine is going to Missouri’s journalism program. Good luck!
