My son is a junior and he got a 1890 (720 - M, 560 - R, 610 -W) this year in SAT. He took it in 9th and 10th as well and got only in the 1500s. However, he took ACT this year for the first time and to our surprise got a 32 :)
(34 - M, 34-E, 28-S,30-R)

He goes to a good school in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

He is planning to apply for Engineering

His GPA in 10th was 4.0 (Honors Algebra, Honors Spanish)
GPA in 11th so far is 3.83 (AP History, AP chemistry, AP statistics, Honors
Analysis, Honors Spanish)

He is planning to apply at U of M, Purdue, Virgina tech, Georgia tech and Penn State Engineering. His first choice is University of Michigan.

My question is: Is it okay if we send just the ACT score to schools that accept ACT score and NOT send SAT score?

His ACT score is very good, so it makes no sense to send the SAT score which is considerably lower than the SAT score correlating to that ACT score. His SAT score wouldn't help him, while his ACT score will. If the school accepts either, as most schools do, I wouldn't send the SAT, just the ACT.

check the sites. Send only the ACT if you can, but some schools require that you take SAT 2s, so if you send your ACT, but still have to send SAT2s, then you end up sending SATs also. The beauty about ACT is that you onlh have to let them see one score, whereas the SAT, when scores are sent, shows all SAT and SAT2 scores. Either way though, it looks to me as if your son might go to U of Mich

ALL schools now accept the ACT. If you send both the SAT and the ACT, colleges will use whichever score is more favorable. (It is to their rankings advantage to do so).

About 45 or so schools require the Subject exams, but some will take the ACT in lieu of the subject exams and you will not need to send the SAT. If you do need to send Subject exams, the school will see the SAT scores, but, again, will use the higher ACT score. Check with each school about their subject exam requirements -- but if no subject exams are required, I'd just send the ACT to save time and money.

Thank you for all of your replies. Now I am leaning towards asking him not to send the SAT score. He really, really wants to go to U of Mich. Do you think he has a good chance?

His EC's are not that great. He did some volunteering through NHS. He plays JV tennis. He also did summer volunteering. He is looking for a job now.

In Michigan, the ACT is the more popular test. I wouldn't bother with sending the SAT, and at UMich, the ACT takes place of the SAT and the SAT IIs.

If he played tennis for more than one year, and volunteered regularly, his ECs are fine. If he can get his summer job to keep him on part time during the fall, all the better.
If Michigan is still rolling (I seem to remember some talk of changing that), he should have a good chance if he applies early.
