I am thinking about applying for the SAT Subject test for U.S. History. However, I am currently taking AP U.S. History. I'm not sure if it's worth taking the subject test when I am going to take the the AP test in May. Does anyone have any advice to offer? Should I take it or no? Thanks!

It really depends…

Do you want to go to a selective school that requires subject tests?

Are you excelling in US history?

They aren’t necessarily on the same curriculum, so I would recommend that you take a look at what the SAT II covers, and maybe take a practice test or two.

If you do well, and are knowledgeable about the majority of the SAT II curriculum, then of course you should take it.

A 700+ subject test score could only help your application (unless of course, you are attending an elite Ivy where that may be on the low side)

Ok, I can help because I had the same concern.

I scored a 700 on the Subject test and got a 4 on the AP. I wasn’t going to send in my SAT II because it wasn’t as good as two other scores of mine (750’s in Math II and Spanish) and you only need two for most schools so I figured the 700 would work against me (stupidly). But I decided to send it anyways (after a good talk with my guidance counselor) and it obviously wasn’t such a bad decision seeing as I got accepted to my #1 choice school (which I will keep to myself because I don’t want to be judged, but let’s just say it was a school that actually required SAT II’s). And the course actually helped a lot with the subject matter so I would go for it. Just take a practice exam or two before you take the test and you’ll be fine.

Thank you so much!

Thankss!!!

If you decide to do it, I would definitely suggest taking some practice tests to prepare!

you can find them on sparknotes or in the collegeboard book
