Do colleges in the northeast (Cornell, NYU) weigh the SAT as the same as ACT? or is the SAT weighed more? For example, if i get 1800ish on SATs and 33-34ish on ACT, will i have better chance with the ACT?

Absolutely. Find a conversion chart. A 33-34 ACT is phenomenally better than an 1800 SAT.

In the midwest they like ACT more, or it seems.

In the NE, the elite ones like you mentioned, will like the SAT more. More people took it so it is easier to compare.

They WILL NOT go by a direct ACT --> SAT translation, it will be slightly lower than that.

That being said 34 is WAY better than an 1800 so if you CANNOT increase SAT go with ACT.

I never said that they will do a direct conversion, I just wanted to make sure that OP knew what a big difference that was in scores.

I would be interested in knowing the basis for your opinion, viola. What evidence is there that "elite" schools favor the SAT over the ACT?

they take both now. supposed to be unbiased too

I agree. If you cannot increase you SAT's, then just take the ACT's.
33-34 is a very good score, so let's just leave them to assume that your SAT's would be just as good had you taken it! =]

It makes no difference whatever which brand of test you take.
