I am african american and am aiming for a 2350 on the SAT. I know I can get this score with studying. My question is would this look good on my application if I attained it. I have seen alot of posts that say that tests scores arent as important as we make them out to be.

That depends. A 2350 looks good on any application. But if your question is, “does a 2350 look a lot better than a 2310?” the answer is probably not.

ok so lets say that I fall a little short of that goal and end up with like a 2280 or 2300, would anyone of those make any difference?

I really don’t want to start another racial debate, but in all honesty, from all the accounts I’ve seen on CC,

if you’re african american and got a 2300 on the SATs, you’re pretty much in anywhere.

I have yet to see an african american reject with over 2250. (granted I haven’t seen many examples)

Nope. No difference. If you have a good transcript and can write a good essay, with those scores you will be in great shape. It’s not a lottery ticket, but it would make you a great candidate at any college. Best of luck to you!

to username- I honestly know that I can get atleast a 2200 , and its ok I understand because not alot of africcan americans that I know push themselves, will atleast to the extent that I do and dont worry you arent starting the race debate lol

I wouldn’t say no difference.

BUT the difference between a 2300 and a 2350 is so small, that it’s really not worth spending the time and money on those 50 points (that you can’t guarantee) when you can spend your time on other things.

EDIT: question is, can you really get that 2350?

a friend I know spent a whole year studying for the SATs, at least 3 hours a day, until finally he got at least 2200 on every practice test he can find from the internet, library and other people (He’s INCREDIBLY cheap, always borrowing other people’s lead, and never buys a new pencil even though his 7 year old one is almost completely broken and has been taped back together at least 10 times, and he’s not poor)

BUT ANYWAY,

he got a 1800 on the actual test.

With your credentials and such a gracious demeanor, you are going to be incredibly successful.

to username, well Im not like your friend lol, I dont spend 3hrs a day and not cheap. But I always strive to achieve something, and I dont work my brain to overload, which it seems thats what your friend did, I make sure I have enough sleep so that my brian can proceess the information that I am learning, but you do have a point nothing is a guarantee.

Thank you zoosermom:)lol

Also I am extremely motivated. To make a point, when I was a fifth grader, I was not the kid in the best shape, yet not fat, and we had fitness day in gym which we had to run a mile. I rran that mile in 10:35 secs( yes I remember the exact time lol). I saw my other friends who ran sub eight minute miles and decided that I wanted to be in better shape and so I worked out any time I had the chance. Now I am a junior and am running sub 5 min miles, and have a personal best time of 4:29.9 secs( which still doesnt qualify me for state in track and field but whatever lol). I already have that mentality that nothing comes easy, I am a foreign student that came to this wonderfull country to bettter myself, make a difference, make my parents proud, and to show them that I will be forever greatful for tthem bringing me to this country to give me the opportunities that they never had when they were young.

I would bet you a cupcake that they already are more proud than you can ever know.

Good luck and keep us posted, ok?

ok and thank you zoosermom lol:)
