Hi. I'm a sophomore. Could I please have some scheduling advice for my junior year? My public school in CT of about 2,000 offers many AP's. This will be the first year that I can take them. I am planning on taking chemistry & algebra 2 this summer, to move ahead in math and science. I'm definitely taking AP US History, H Spanish 4, & AP Language and Composition. Should I take H PreCalc or can I go straight to Calculus??

Here are some AP's offered:
AP Enviro
AP Bio
AP Calculus AB
AP Calculus BC
AP Chem
AP Psychology
AP Microeconomics
AP Euro
AP Physics (pretty sure)

I wouldn’t advise you to load up on APs if next year will be your first year dealing with them. I’d say 3 - 5 max, but it depends on how driven you are. As for your PreCalc/Calc situation, unless you consider Math to be your forte, I would stick with PreCalc. I thought of myself as a very strong Maths student and I struggled with BC Calc at the beginning of the year. It took some work to get an A first quarter. That’s probably the biggest hurdle; I’ve been doing very well after that. Go see your teacher in the mornings if you’re confused on topics, and don’t hesitate to ask. It helps a lot.

I’m going go assume that your summer’s Algebra 2 class is somewhat of an abridged version. If this is the case, I would not recommend jumping right into an AP calc class. A great understanding of algebra is necessary to do well in calculus, and an H precalc class would provide a little more review and understanding.

Don’t jump into Calc unless you are very strong in math. Did you take Geometry this year or algebra 1? Unless you took Geo, absolutely ace algebra 2 and would be happy working out the math that you will need but skipped on your own, wait until senior year for calc. Also, choose your APs based , in part , on what you like.

I agree with post #3. Pre-Calc reuses a LOT of what you learn in algebra 2 and if you’re going to take the abridged, summer version of alg. 2, you’ll definitely want to take pre-calc to reinforce those skills.

AP US History is NOT an easy AP, and I wouldn’t recommend it as a first choice (although some people have taken it as their first AP). Too bad World History isn’t available; that would be a better stepping stone before USH.

AP Psychology is pretty easy and if you have a genuine interest in the subject, that wouldn’t be a bad choice.

What are some of your interests? Which of those APs would you like to take at some point over the next two years?
