Scholarship appeals success ?

Hello, I am Mushfique Ahmed from Bangladesh. I am interested in applying to Temple University and want some information regarding the Presidential Scholarship. So here are my stats and please tell me whether I stand a chance of getting this scholarship:
SAT: 2090- CR+Math:1440
IGCSE O’level: 7 A* and 1A out of 8 subjects.
A’Level( AS) : 3A & 1A* out of 4 subjects.I am yet to take my A2 in May 2016.
Since I am international student i dont quite know about the GPA system. I presume an A= 4.0(the highest). Then again, I am not sure so if you could please help me out here, I would be really grateful. Also does meeting the minimum criteria for the presidential scholarship guarantee my getting the scholarship? Do you know how of these scholarships are handed out every year?
Thanks in advance.

Temple has an international dept and they are very helpful, let me get you their contact info. they can answer your questions and you can reach them by email if you are unable to call them

http://www.temple.edu/isss/

I believe the webpage i provided will also lead you to scholarship info for intl applicants. if you cannot find this, let me know and i will track down that info for you.

Re one of your questions, i believe for all students, including international students, you have to meet both the GPA and in your case SAT requirements for each scholarship level, Yes, if you meet both the GPA and test requirements, you get scholarship you are eligible for.

and yes, an A should be a 4 on a 4.0 scale but there may be some variances im not aware of.

As far as i know, international students receive the scholarships for 8 semesters. the website should answer that question and i assume it is similar to domestic students, namely as long as you keep the minimum GPA for your scholarship, you will get a scholarship for 8 semesters of college, For domestic students, Temple only pays for up to 17 credits per semester(which is the max a college student would want to take in one semester anyway).

please contact the intl dept for more exact info. They do this day in and day out and are WAY more knowledgeable than me. i contacted them on behalf of another student who did not have way to phone them and was very impressed with the staff’s professionalism and helpfulness. And i learned when i talked to them that they do a lot of email responses as most of you are oversees.

Testing will be no problem for him. He’s going to minor in math, and has taken up through Linear Algebra and multivariable calculus. He also did well on the Caclulus BC and English AP tests, so he should have a leg up. His current plan is to major in film (he was accepted into the film/media arts school). I think he’s already thinking ahead to possibly being an RA at some point.

Thank you for the reply. Also, 8 semesters means 4 years right? as in, 2 semesters per year? so essentially it bears the total tuition for the entirety of my undergraduate degree right? Also, is there any way for the room and board cost to be lessened? as in are there any other grants, awards or gift assistance that you know about?
Thank you.

yes on the 4 year question. i will write more about pros and cons of meal plans as you can make some cuts on the meal plan and by living in one of the less expensive dorms. not sure on other aid since you are international. i know there are some rules in place as to how that works out I don’t know enough on international students financial requirements to make intelligent comments. room and board and other expenses are around $17000 to $20000 a year with full tuition scholarship.

Thank you. I will keep in touch then. Also according to a few websites the room and board costs seem to be around the 10-11k mark  and what does this “other expenses” mean? is it about personal expenses coz if it is then it should be subjective from person to person.

Yes, others expenses would inclue travel, any groceries you buy, shampoo, and anything else you buy over year. Temple estimates $4000 to estimate financial aid for students

Thank you! and if i get admitted and choose to enroll i will knock you about the ways to cut room prices and meal plans etc.

sounds good!! Good luck!!

Appeal wasn’t successful, but the scholarship he did get puts the tuition below in state. Wife’s parents are going to help out, so he’s good to go. His hour window to select housing is coming up on Sunday.

@mstomper - I hope that you son enjoys his time at Temple! I am sorry to hear that your appeal was unsuccessful. I am taking my DD to the admitted student day next Sunday (March 13) and looking forward to getting a glimpse of the honors dorm. Have you visited for an admitted student day yet?

@PhilaSkiMom, if he goes it will probably be in April. We have things going on for the other dates.

oh, i might be on parent’s panel on April 9th if you make it that weekend.

@ctl987, @mstomper - I am volunteering at the April 2nd admitted student day. Please PM me if either of you will be there!

My DD hadn’t even considered TU until her guidance counselor and I urged her to apply in February. She was named a Founder’s Scholar but her GPA is higher than that level, and her SAT is only 30 pts below the next level up.
She had an illness last Spring/Fall when she took the SATs which is now under control. Also, her other top choice (with a very strong reputation in her major) gave her significant merit aid and she was accepted to a special leadership program.
I called to find out about an appeal and was told to fax info, but the woman in the office said it’s unlikely to make a difference.
The difference in scholarship levels is $5000 which is significant.

Is it worth it to try?

We visited last weekend and both really liked it, especially because the director of her program seemed like someone who’d inspire DD to succeed. Right now I believe it’s actually her first choice.

yes appeal

We got additional funds from another school (with a very highly ranked program for her major) so I sent all the info with the letter of awards from the other school.

Fingers crossed (and everything else) it works.

Yes hello I am a incoming freshman that received the Provost Scholarship, and was admitted into the Honor college. I was planning on submitting an appeal, but I have no idea on how to submit an appeal.

And if anyone is still looking for a roommate for temple, I’m open

@Thenewlaw whst would the basis of your appeal be? Honestly, if you already committed I think your chance at an appeal would be slim. Why would they throw you more $ now, unless there was an error made, of course. By the way, I feel your pain, I also got Provost, based on their GPA calculation, but I had the SAT for presidential. As for housing, did you apply to the honors LLC? Is it full?
