I am happy to report my son received his letter today congratulating him on receiving the Presidential Award. He is so excited. Now waiting to hear from the honor’s college. What a way to start the week. Roll Tide Roll.

Congrats!!

A note to others…

If you qualify for UA Scholar or below, Bama may delay sending notification of scholarships because they may be waiting to see if your fall scores will qualify you for a higher scholarship.

Presidential Scholar here. Does receiving a letter today mean that this figure is the extent of the institutional money I will receive, other than departmental scholarships like for band?

Alto: not necessarily. If you are a candidate for National Merit Finalist, you won’t find out about the rest of the scholarship until early Spring, when NMCorp names their finalists.

altosax- My son is also interested in the band. He plays mellophone in marching band and clarinet in concert band. He really wants to march but will also try out for some sort of ensemble. We meet the band director when we toured during spring break, he was really informative. The excitement is building…

Alto…

Band scholarships would be additional.

What is your major?

Are you a NMSF?

Students also could go from being Presidential Scholars to Crimson Scholars – but that would happen in the spring. Crimson Scholars (there are just a handful each year) also receive honors housing, among other goodies. If someone is a University Fellow, he or she could receive an elite fellowship and earn additional monies. Again, there are just a handful of Elite Fellows.

Will have to go over to the new house (which we were supposed to be moved into btw, which is why I told S to use it for 'bama app) and see if it is there. Actually it will have to be H or S as I am in Florida otherwise I’d be driving over now. Congrats to everyone!

Hokiefan, does your son plan on attending the Honor Band on February 3-6, 2011? The students can knock out three different auditions there: music school if they’ll be a music major or minor, Million Dollar Band audition, and other band/ensemble audition.

My daughter plays flute, and she and her best friend (trumpet player) are going to have their band director nominate them to be in the Honor Band. They were both section leader in grades 11 and 12, so I doubt there will be any problem with them being accepted. They’ve each also had meetings with the flute and trumpet instructors.

When did everyone complete their scholarship applications? I believe DD only got hers completed and submitted the latter half of last week.

Bamamom-

I wasn’t aware of the audition that weekend. Can you tell me alittle more about the honor band. My son is not a section leader for marching band but he is first chair in concert band. When we visited he was told he could try out for both instruments for MB and go from there. I really don’t think he would make it on mellophone as this is just his third year. He stepped up in sophmore year as they were short horns and the band director got him private lessons. He is much better at clarinet as he has been playing since 6th grade.

As far as scholarship application date, he applied the end of July. His regular app was sent in the beginning of July. He also applied for honors the end of July but has not heard anything. He is has great stats 34ACT and 4.8 W GPA with many ECs but is not NMF. He is going to apply for the Elite Fellows when he is invited to do so.

Good luck to your daughter. Maybe we will see each other in Feb. I wonder how many kids audition and make it? I hope my son can keep up with the band stuff and engineering.

*He is has great stats 34ACT and 4.8 W GPA with many ECs but is not NMF. He is going to apply for the Elite Fellows when he is invited to do so. *

He should also apply to CBH. Last year CBH many students who weren’t NMF were offered additional scholarship money.

I would like him to apply to the CBH program but he says he is not interested. I had him research the program on the Bama website and it did not peak his interest one bit. So I went into my mom mode and told him all the wonderful things I had read about the program from you all. Still no interest. He is wanting to study aerospace engineering and possible minor in Spanish. He will be coming to school with AP credit from 8 classes and 2 dual enrollments from the CC. He may change his mind and apply. He really has loads of credentials that have nothing to do with his great stats.

Thanks again to everyone here for all their help. We would not have gotten this far without you all.

Hokiefan, sure, I’ll be happy to tell you what I know about the Honor Band.

We’re here in the Huntsville area, out in a county school, so it’s a little easier for us to attend. DD attended the Crimson Camp last summer, which is a week-long music camp mainly attended by in-state band students. She loved it! We wanted her to attend Crimson Camp because it gave her a whole week on campus to get to know some of the music faculty.

When researching Crimson Camp, we learned about the Honor Band. Here’s a page on the music school’s website about Honor Band: [University of Alabama School of Music Honor Band](http://music.ua.edu/honor-band/). The link gives much more detail, but I’ll hit some of the highlights.

The purpose of the Honor Band is to recognize the accomplishments of exceptional high school musicians. They will award Alabama Concert Ensemble Participation Scholarships and Million Dollar Band Participation Scholarships at the end of the weekend. You don’t have to be a music major to qualify for those scholarships. They also award one Full-Tuition Scholarship to the School of Music; you do have to be a music major for that one.

In order to attend the Honor Band, a student has to be nominated by their high school band director. A director is guaranteed that at least one student he/she nominates will be selected to attend the Honor Band. There is a participation fee, but the website doesn’t say what that is. The student is responsible for all housing, transportation, and meals.

If Abby and her best friend are both accepted, we’ll drive down with her friend’s mom and all share a hotel room. The other mom and I will explore campus and T’town while the girls are involved in clinics, rehearsals, auditions, etc. More time to go visit the honors dorms and take room measurements! (I also found out there’s a yarn store probably about half a mile from the honors dorms. DD and I might be in trouble!)

We received our scholarship letter over the weekend as well. Did not qualify for Presidential but it did say, should test scores change, she would be considered for higher scholarships and would be notified of such.

My daughter is also not a NMF but has the stats for UFE. She’ll also be applying for that and CBHP. If she’ll ever find time to write the UHP and CBHP essays so we can submit those applications! Maybe this weekend she’ll get around to it.

S received the letter last night, yay. I Would like to see it though I will have to wait a few days until I get home. I did not expect it so soon, so that was a nice surprise. S applied mid-Aug I think. I will feel good about sending that early deposit, not that I wouldn’t have anyway.

I have a few questions. S is texting me that he got the letter for the Presidential(yay) which is $20,500 per year and he has to maintain a 3.0 to keep it for the 4 years. I thought he had to maintain a 3.3 or is that for the Honors College, I am confused? But a 3.0 should be np! What happens if tuition increases? How many credits does that cover 16+?

D received her letter yesterday also!

Idinct: The Presidential, National Merit and Crimson Scholars all have scholarships that cover through 20 hours per semester. A student will need an override from the registrar if he really wants to take that many hours (up to 18, it’s no problem).

All scholarships are adjusted to cover the increase in tuition.

As for the GPA, here is what is on the Honors College page.

“All UHP students must maintain a 3.3 GPA to graduate from the UHP. IHP students and CBHP students must maintain a 3.0 GPA to graduate from those programs. The remaining requirements for each program are different, so visit the programs’ webpages to learn more. Your diploma will indicate “With Honors” upon your successful completion of the Honors Programs’ requirements.”

BTW, never say that a 3.0 GPA should be no problem. There are some kids who do struggle to keep it.
