scholarship/award money after acceptance?

Hello all! today i recieved a letter saying i was accepted into the engineering program for UPitt. It didn't mention anything about scholarship money and the letter was dated November 30. However, I submitted an additional essay (for monetary consideration) the same day and I was wondering if i should contact my regional director to get them to reevaluate me???

Here's a few stats:
1880/2400 on sat
29 cum on act, (30 on math)
out of state
3.63 unweighted gpa
4.29 weighted gpa
lot of extracurriculars with leadership
come from a national blue ribbon high school
first generation american

I think your SATs are a bit low for a scholarship. It wouldn't hurt to ask, though. And there are dedicated scholarships for engineers.

the scholarship letter comes about 2 weeks later.

^^^however, my scholarship letter came a month after i received my acceptance, so, who knows... (i definitely didn't think i would qualify for one).

arachnophobia12, how much did you end up recieving, and what were your stats like.
i'd really like to go there--but since im paying on my own, i cant end up w/ 130,000 dollars+ in debt after school.

^^^full-tuition (honors challenge scholarship). i got 1290 on my SAT (math killed me), and a 3.94w GPA (i haven't tried to figure out mu uw GPA). the eligibility for this scholarship is "Based largely on academic achievement in high school and SAT I or ACT results. A scholarship to promote diversity. For students enrolled in the School of Arts and Sciences (A&S) or beginning in A&S and transferring to other Pitt schools." -(from the pitt website)."

Son got a blue folder called the academic portfolio that contained a letter from the Office of Admissions and Financial Aid. There wasn't any mention of a scholarship. Does this mean no merit money or is there another letter that comes separately for scholarships?

Good news: My scholarship letter was seperate from the academic portfolio.
Bad news: My scholarhip letter came several weeks before the academic portfolio.

D received acceptance letter then received scholarship info about 2 weeks later. The academic portfolio came later.

Thanks for the info! We got the academic portfolio 2 weeks after hearing about the acceptance. The envelope containing the academic portfolio was open when we got it. The flap wasn't sealed shut at all. It's good to know nothing is missing and there's still hope. The original congrats letter said another letter formally offering honors would be coming- that hasn't arrived either.

the scholarship stuff comes with the honors stuff

My scholarship stuff and honors stuff came separately.

It seems like people receive things in different combinations (and in different orders). FWIW d's honors and scholarship stuff came together.

I have posted this before but as acceptances trickle in so do the questions. Base on our experience and that of other current freshmen who posted last year: there does not seem to be any rhyme of reason as to the order of materials received and time between. Often the letters received have conflicting dates on the letterhead. I think the thing to remember is that the admissions and honors are separate departments. Often the mailings overlap. I would say that by a month's time all documents should be received. Admissions, scholarships. honors,...All except the Chancelor's (sp?) I don't believe we ever heard that daughter did not get asked for an interview just a final letter saying you didn't get it.

More than stats come into play. Relative to arachno, my son had 1400+/1600 SAT's and 4.6 gpa, and he got only a fraction of what arachno did. But arachno got one to "promote diversity" and there are several of those. If you don't have something to "promote diversity" there are only two scholarships that apply and I think those are probably much harder to get.

bluejay, at least you got a letter. We only could assume that son didn't win the chancellors because, even after several inquirey calls, we never got a letter. I like Pitt, but their system seems disorganized and does not make things clear to the applicants. Maybe they like it that way (?).

I agree that it's more than stats. My d has 1400/1600 2130/2400 SAT. 4.45 gpa and was offered 10k (we're out of state.)

For my son, he received his stuff about a month apart. The academic portfolio (December) arrived three weeks after the scholarship letter (November) arrived. The honors stuff arrived with the initial acceptance package (October). They were all dated wierd as the portfolio had an October 31 -- I guess it was suppose to be mailed back in October.

Another parent and I were contemplating this question but couldn't find the information on their website:

Does anyone know how many full tuition scholarships Pitt gives out and do you think the earlier you apply -- the better your chances for it?

Not sure how many they give out. I know from last year many were offered, but some were turned down because the applicant decided to go elsewhere. I know of 4 people for sure that are freshman this year that have full tuition. That's not saying that there are many more out there.

When a person declines a scholarship, they don't re-offer that money to somebody else.

well, if it makes me sound slightly more deserving...i got a 31 on my ACT. (i'm also a PA res. who attends the top PA public school. i guess they took that info. into consideration).
