Hi! I've been accepted to UGA through EA and I'm very excited :) I was wondering if anyone knows when scholarships like Charter and Regent OOS waivers start going out. I'm curious because I'm out of state and I can't really afford UGA unless they give me at least a half out of state waiver. I'm very anxious to know if I can go to UGA!!
Thank you :)

Actually nevermind, I just found out what I wanted to know somewhere else. Sorry!

what did you find out- when will they go out

My D got a letter for the Charter scholarship in the mail today.

Congrats- that is really fantastic to get it first round. I would think that means she will most definitely get an auto-admit to honors. Just curious, is she instate or out of state, and would you mind sharing her stats. My son is 1550, plus 750 writing, 4.0, 7 ap classes, but he did not get a first round charter in the mail yesterday. I am really anxious about honors auto-admit, because he is only interested in GA unless he gets this. Also, did your D apply for foundation fellow?

Congrats Gamom, My daughter is hoping for a scholarship also. Our mail is always delayed from everyone elses, so we are still hoping she gets one. When you check your mystatus does it list that she got a scholarship on there? You have to let us know if she hears about auto admit to honors. So many were turned down or deferred at UGA this year, I am just really thankful that she got in.

@gasenioryear - We are instate. In the letter it said, it was offered to the the top 6% of students. Your sons stats are a little higher than my Ds so I am pretty sure you should get it as well.

I checked her myUGA account and didn’t see anything about it there so I don’t know if there is anywhere in the system you can look for it without the letter.

We aren’t quite sure if we want to apply honors program yet but if she gets auto-admit we won’t turn it down.

Congrats. to all who received Charter or other scholarships, and best of luck to those hoping to receive one soon.

@gamomof3: Unless the Check Admissions page changed from last year, there should be a box listing scholarships you’ve been awarded.

@ gamomof3. Congrats to your D on the scholarship. Being in the top 6% of admitted students that was obviously a highly competitive pool is amazing. We have not gotten a letter but for admissions ours came about 5 days after others because we are in a very rural area. But I heard it is supposed to be on the mystatus page and it is not, so I assume we did not get one first round. Have you checked your mystatus page to see if it is posted there? I assume she will get auto-admit because it goes out to the top 10%. Did she apply for foundation fellows as well.
To Kimdawg, I guess you can anxiously await the mail like us. Good luck and let me know if you hear anything. I did hear from honors that auto admits were to be mailed at the end of this week.

Congrats to everyone who was accepted this year!

Last year when my D was going through this process, we were told at the Scholars Day that approximately the top 2% of EA accepted students would be offered auto admits to the Honors Program. The current admissions blog is not sure this is true, but it is what we were told by Honors. In the end, Honors looks for approximately 500 freshman out of a class of 4800 or so. Last year that cutoff appeared to be in the mid 1400’s for CR & M for SAT’s and at least 32 or over for the ACT for auto admits. My D just missed the cut off, but was sent a letter encouraging her to apply. She applied and was accepted to Honors in early March.

As far as the Charter scholarships go, I advise you to look at old postings here on CC. It wasn’t as cut and dry and auto admit for Honors (purely on test scores). There were people who were auto admit for Honors who didn’t get the Charter and vice versa. As they only offer 225-275 Charter scholarships, not everyone in Honors can get one.

In the end, remember that we are so lucky to receive the Hope scholarship. People from other states can’t believe how lucky we are to have that.

Best of luck to you. Feel free to ask or pm me if you have any other questions. My D has just finished her first semester. Overall it has been a great experience for her.

I just tried checking my status and its not available so I can’t tell if the scholarship is listed there.

We are on the fence as to whether we want to apply to Honors. What are the perks/benefits of Honors?

@ gamomof3- Perks/benefits are great if D is a person who would benefit from a smaller environment inside of a very large university. Benefits include honors classes for all core subjects and many upper level, with only 17 students in each class. She is not required to take all honors-only 9 for all 4 years- but it gives her the option for smaller classes in ones she thinks would benefit her. Also, honors gets priority scheduling over all others except athletes. Honors students get assigned an honors department advisor, so they have 2 advisors available to them when navigating scheduling. Honors has an honors dorm-Meyers Hall for only honors students. Do not know if she would be interested in this. Honors students have scholarships available to them for internships andsemesters abroad. Honors students have option of getting a masters along with undergraduate degree in 4 years. Hope will not pay for masters but it pays for 4 years, so saves money to combine. THey allow 9 hours masters work to dually count for masters and undergraduate. My son is all about honors or no to UGA, so keep your fingers crossed for me.
I think she will definitely get an auto admit if she already got a charter. Will you do me a favor, if you ever get onto the my status page, let me know if it is posted there that she got a scholarship. If not, then we will still have a chance. I am more concerned with honors than the scholarship, since we do have hope, but if he did not get the scholarship then that drops him down a little and may mean no ********* as well. I am a nervous wreck!!!

sorry gamomof3- do not know what i hit. trying to say no ********* as well.

it keeps bleeping me out. wonder if it thinks i am saying a bad word. trying to type auto admit.

I’d wait till at least Jan.1 before starting the Honors application. The auto admits should be mailed out this week.

gasenioryear: I can’t see how your son would not get an auto admit to Honors. His SAT scores are tops. He also has a decent shot at FF/Ramsey scholarships. Did he apply to those? The perks for those are really nice.

The perks for Honors are also nice. I’ve heard mixed reviews as to people liking Myers. You aren’t guaranteed Myers if you are in Honors. My D applied for Myers, but didn’t get it. The location is really nice and the rooms are big.

I’d say one of the best perks is the early registration. My D had no trouble getting all of the classes that she wanted for spring semester.

Her Honors adviser was not worth the effort. he admitted right off that he knew nothing about her 2 double majors. She now has advisers from each academic department and is fine.

The freshman honors seminar (required) goes over a lot of information about what the honors program offers. It also encourages the students to become involved with many facets of the university.

Honors students can sign up for a faculty mentor. And there are a number of honors seminars that are offered each semester. My D enjoyed the one she took this semester.

Don’t know a lot about the combined BA/MA. That would partially depend on how many AP credits your child has and could be dependent on the particular major/department.

Basically I told my D that the Honors program has a lot of advantages and perks, but if you are willing to seek out those opportunities, such as research and study abroad, most of them are available to all students.

thanks somewhereinga. You give good advice. I will tell you why we are anxious- he has a 4.o and he has taken 7 AP classes- all that his school offers. But his school adds 4 points to his gpa. Because of that he is competing against others who have over a 4.o as reweighted by UGA, and he gets no points for AP. Uga says GPA comes first and because the class is so competitive I am worried this could keep him out of auto admit to honors. He still has a 4.o without the 4 points, but Ga does not take these out and then weight. They said in the blog once that a school that adds points does put a student who would have otherwise still had a 4.o at a disadvantage because they are stuck at that 4.o and have a lesser GPA than someone from another school that also had a 4.o, took the same, or less, number of AP classes, but their school added more points. Just stressing right now. Thanks for your support!
How does your daughter like UGA? Is she finding a niche in such a big atmosphere?

i do not mean 4 points to his gpa. i mean to his average, so if he got a 94 for the semester it turns into a 98. But an A ia an A for UGA purposes, so if he made a A without the 4 points, which he did in each AP class, then the 4 points actually hurt him because it means his GPA was “weighted” and UGA cannot add the additional .5 for each AP class taken.

also, somewhereinga, he did apply for ff/ramsey, but i am thinking if he did not get a first round charter then he has no chance for ff. I know charter is run by admissions and ff by honors, so maybe honors will look at the whole application and compare the gpas as more equivalent, but I am not sure. Will be glad when next week comes and we at least know about auto admits.
Has your d taken any core classes in honors yet, and if so did she like them?

gasenioryear: I totally understand your position/anxiety, hence my comments. It is wonderful to know that they are accepted and yet you await the next step. I am sure your son will make the cutoff for Honors auto admit. I am not sure how the gpa is truly handled. I have also read the statements on how admissions handles the weighted versus unweighted gpa, but also I can’t name any school that doesn’t give points for an AP class. My D’s school gave 5 pts for an AP class, but no points for Honors classes. Like your son, that would hurt her weighted gpa as for all but 1 of her AP classes she would have had an A regardless of the 5 points. Last year we did not self report grades, so I am not sure how that changes the picture.

Have you seen what the guidance department actually sends to UGA? Like I said, I don’t know of any school in GA that doesn’t give some weight to AP classes. I do not think that your son will be at a disadvantage gpa wise.

As far as rigor goes, if your son has taken all the AP classes that his school offers the he has taken the most rigorous schedule that he could. I was blown away at the Scholars Day that we attended by the number of AP credits that some of the FF students had coming into UGA. My D’s school certainly didn’t offer that many AP courses

I’d say that with his gpa and SAT scores that he stands a good chance to make the interview weekend for FF/Ramsey. Due to budget cuts, it appears that in the last 2 years that the number of FF/Ramsey scholarships has dropped by a good bit.

I wish you the best of luck!

Hey everyone, can anyone tell me how UGA would figure my daughter’s average for scholarships and honors? Our school only adds bonus points to AP classes for ranking purposes. They don’t add any points on the transcript. She has a 4.0 unweighted(she made all A’s) and she has taken 5 AP classes. Our school only has 5 AP’s that this years seniors could take. She made a 32 on the ACT and is ranked 2nd in her class. She went to GHP this summer in physics and has a lot of EC’s. Her most dedicated EC is competitive twirling. She has been involved since she was 8 years old and has 15 national level titles.
We haven’t heard anything from scholarships or the honors program since she was accepted. Her stats may not be high enough. Does anyone want to share their stats that has heard about scholarships and the honors program? Congrats to everyone that has already been awarded scholarships it is a real honor to be at the top of the class.
