They will cap it at total cost.

If you mean that if the scholarship goes over the total cost, the rest is returned to the college, this is not true. The remainder is reimbursed to the student, cash. This means there are Shipman scholars (and other scholarship recipients) who earn (fairly significant amounts of) money by coming to UM.

tetra: the letter for the engineering scholarhsip said only to the limit of total cost of attendence. I assumed that the Shipman would be the same. If that is not true he could have almost all of the Shipman for his own as he may have another outside $75 K in scholarships in addition to the 45 K per year plus room and board? He would have more money going to college than I made in years after I graduated (I know we should not bring the Civil war into this discussion)...

Well, your son would certainly be an asset to any university he attends, as an alum, I hope he come to Michigan, money well spent.

Thanks fredmar, she'll be waiting to hear about other merit offers and financial aid in April. Also, she hasn't been able to visit all of the schools she applied to, so she'll be traveling after all decisions are in. I'm not at liberty to release stats, but I can say that SAT and AP scores are high like ood's son; though not perfect and her school only offers about 8 AP classes! Although I think she's very accomplished, I'm still blown away that she's a Shipman nominee, we never expected this. And looking at ood's son''s stats, WOW, she's in incredible company!

Fredmar: Thanks for the kind words. I have been so impressed with the number of amazing young folks there are these days. Makes me feel quite unaccomplished and a major slacker!
As far as him going to UM goes, well he has been accepted into MIT (his life time dream school), Cal Tech, and Illinois and is waiting on a couple of other high powered ones. Although his mom and I would question the sanity of not giving serious consideration to a school with the national stature of Michigan, (We are trying to fund a very heavy private college education for his older sister) he is the one who has worked his behind off since about the 5th grade and because of the that the choice will be his to make in April.

I will say that since it appears that global warimg has recently left Michigan and the Midwest, the appeal of winter at one of the three big schools in California could rise!!

What kind of money do they give to in state students? I have a 4.0 and a 32 (33 superscored) and I'm wondering if there is any chance for money.

I ended up getting a $60,000 scholarship with a 30 on the ACT and a 3.9 GPA. I'm out of state and took alot of extra curricular activites, National Honor's Society, Beta Club, and pending honor's grad.

how do you find out about scholarhip?

capn:

I'd have to say you must have some really amazing EC's cause 3.9 + 30 definitely isn't somethign way above avg at UMich...especially for OOS

ur son amazes me and makes me feel like ****....best of luck to him, hes gonna do great things

Well yeah, I've got alot of leadership positions and have done quite a bit of volunteer work. I wouldnt say absolutely amazing ECs but a good quantity of ECs nonetheless. Just showing that I'm an active student. Dunno, I might have done exceptionally well on my SATs but I really dont remember what I got on em.

yeah, I know this one kid with a 4.0 umich gpa, 10 AP classes and a 36 ACT that hasn't gotten any money -- not even the puny 1500 regents.

Personally, I've got a lot of service, but that isn't anything spectacular.

Ok, So I shouldn't be expecting anything. I do have some good ECs, but I have to get in before I get any money.

dad4son: I'm headed to Yale next year. Even with the scholarship, UMich tuition is still really hefty!! And as a girl originally from the east, I'm excited to head back!!!

i just got a letter today offering the $10,000/year LSA scholarship! i was so surprised (and ridiculously happy) since I thought they'd all been mailed out already...so for people who haven't heard anything yet, there's still hope.

btw i have a 4.0 GPA, 35 ACT, and am instate.

Anyone else?

Yeah they sent me a letter for a $40,000 total LSA scholarship. I'm not sure if theirs a name for the scholarship, and I'm just assuming its for $10,000 a year? I thought it was awesome, but I was really suprised. I'm instate with a 4.0 GPA, and I only sent them the 27 ACT.

It said I got it based on my financial need and the unique qualities I will bring to the University...

I'm just guessing they really liked my essays or something..

I know someone who got a scholarship paying for full tuition--don't know her stats, but she has only taken about 4 AP classes and only has a few ECs. She just went to some dinner for it last week, and I think she heard about it 2 week before that, so there's a chance!

On the Michigan Engineering site it says, "Most merit-based awards are referred to as 'Engineering Scholarships of Honor' and are renewable. "

What are the average stats for those who receive these scholarships? And do they only focus on your stats?
