scholarship $$

It's highly likely that I'll receive a full scholarship to my state school [Kentucky], but I'd rather attend IU if I have the chance. I'm pretty unfamiliar with how they deal with scholarships. Can anybody give me some guidance?

I have not applied yet, but probably will by Sunday or so.

ACT - 35
SAT - 790 CR, 720 M, 760 W

The main issue is my GPA, which is probably like a 3.6 or so. My class rank is therefore also pretty low... maybe top 50% or 40%? If you're willing to read it, here's an explanation:

in the KY school system, we call honors "advanced."

Freshman year:
Adv. English - B/B
Adv. Biology - A/A
Orchestra - A/A
PE - A/A
Adv. College Algebra - A/A
Adv. Latin I - A/A
Adv. Computer - A/A
AP Human Geography - A/A

Sophomore year:
Adv. Spanish II - A/A
Adv. Comp. Programming - A/A
Adv. Geometry/Trig - B/B
AP World History - A/A
Adv. English - A/A
Adv. Chemistry - A/A
Orchestra - A/A
AP Statistics - A/A

Junior year, I got from November to April or so, and it SHOWS!
AP Chemistry - B/C
Adv. Precal - B/D
AP English - A/A
Ind. Research - A/A
AP Computer - A/B
Adv. Spanish III - B/B
Yearbook - A/B
AP US History - A/B

this fall, I got surgery and missed a lot of school. my grades are probably going to be pretty bad...
AP Physics - A?
AP Art History - A
AP Spanish - D probably, though I'm fluent...
AP English - B or C, probably B
AP Calculus BC - B
AP Psychology - B
AP Government - A or B

So, I guess my question is whether or not IU will accept an explanation for my bad grades? If so, is it likely that I will get any money despite the fact that their website says that competitive applicants will be in the top 5% or 10%? I go to a magnet school with art majors/have taken 14 AP classes, so the ranking seems unfair. Will they look at SAT subject scores or AP scores (5, 5, 4, 5, 5, 3, 2)?

thanks for any help.

u can always bargain

Based on your stats, you're a candidate for their $8k/year OOS scholarship but the priority date has already passed and so you may not get merit money even if you meet the requirements. I'm in the same boat.

you'll get 3750 a year OOS, that's what my sister got with similar numbers except had a little better grades

The key here is that the priority date for the automatic scholarships has passed! IU had a large number of early applicants. I don't think the fund is unlimited. I think the gpa for the $8000/yr scholarship is 3.75 minimum. It goes down as the dollar amount decreases.

Okay, thanks for the help. I probably won't apply.

If you had applied in October or November I would say 99% you would have gotten accepted and received some financial aid. The 1% being if you were some kind of serial rapist and just didn't say anything about it. It's January, so that kind of sucks, but I would definitely still apply. I know a lot of people here who dropped out of high school (mostly because of drugs) and scrounged around town high until they realized they were wasting their lives, maybe got their GED's and applied to IU. They were all accepted. I think IU admissions is a group of pretty understanding people. However you are OOS, I don't know, maybe they only have love for fellow Hoosiers.
I would say don't not apply because of your grades, because your test scores alone are strong enough. If there is a reason it should be because it is January which is pretty late. But still, you never know. However, I don't know how much money you will receive because it is on a first come first serve basis. But, still, I would say go ahead and apply. Your test scores show that you are bright, you can always give an explanation for slipped grades.
